You are cordially invited to the next TEDxTheHague salon! Our June edition — M is for Music — is curated by TEDxTheHague co-founder Yolanthe Smit. Yolanthe writes:

"Music posesses the qualities of connection, integration and understanding that make it an important and meaningful expression of human existence. Never before has music been so easily and widely accessible through the internet, through iPods and iPads and other technological means.
To me, music is often better than sex, less messy and the pleasure lasts longer. We have chosen four TED videos that illustrate one or many aspects of music we hope you will find fascinating and satisfying. "

Michael Tilson Thomas: Music and emotion through time
Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas is an all-around music educator — connecting with global audiences, young musicians and concertgoers in San Francisco and London. In this epic overview, he traces the development of classical music through the development of written notation, the record, and the re-mix.

Sivamani: Rhythm is everything, everywhere
Percussionist Sivamani uses traditional Western and Eastern instruments to create a rhythmic tour de force, along with a tub of water, corrugated metal, spoons, luggage, our stage props and even a little audience participation.

David Byrne: How architecture helped music evolve
David Byrne builds an idiosyncratic world of music, art, writing and film. In this talk he asks: Does the venue make the music? From outdoor drumming to Wagnerian operas to arena rock, he explores how context has pushed musical innovation.

Jonathan Baij: Everybody is a human beat box
Jonathan believes every person is a human beat box. A proper one-man band, he filled his lungs and opened his heart at TEDxAmsterdam, telling his life story in words, rhymes and rhythms. He leads us from his humble beginnings to his victorious day at the National Beat Box Championship.
