Theme: Scientific UPDATE. Young people explore the world

Science is not only an opportunity to learn about the reality that surrounds us. It is also the power that shapes and changes the world. During this year's edition of TEDx University of Warsaw, we will find out what kind of changes - soon in the future - will take place thanks to the research work of people who are at the beginning of their scientific path. It is the time for a scientific UPDATE!

Ada Górna

PhD

Urban geographer, researcher and lecturer at the Department of Urban Geography and Spatial Planning at the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies of the University of Warsaw, where she conducts classes on urban development processes, spatial conflicts and the idea of cities of the future. Her doctoral thesis (2021) concerned the role of urban agriculture in the spatial and functional structure of cities in the Global South, and her scientific interests focus primarily on issues related to sustainable development and food systems of cities.

Adam Budziszewski

PhD student

Third-year doctoral student at the Doctoral School in the Humanities of the University of Warsaw. He has a research interest in cremation burial rites and communities in northern and western Mexico. In his doctoral thesis, he tries to combine these interests. He deals with the cremation funeral rite in one of the regions of western Mexico. As part of research not directly related to his doctoral thesis, he is interested in the bioarchaeological analysis of human remains.

Aleksandra Grzegorska

PhD student

A graduate of the Faculty of Archeology at the University of Warsaw. Currently a doctoral student at the Interdisciplinary Doctoral School of the University of Warsaw. She specializes in bioarchaeological research - in particular human remains and primary parasites found in archaeological sites. Based on them, reconstruct information about health and hygiene in the past. Currently, she focuses on the study of the history of Poland from the 16th to the 19th century.

Barbara Krzyżewska

PhD student

Lawyer, bioethicist, PhD student at the Doctoral School of Social Sciences at the University of Warsaw. She is preparing her doctoral dissertation on biotechnological inventions of human origin at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw. Her scientific interests focus on civil law, medical law, intellectual and industrial property, as well as research ethics.

Ibrahim Mertcan Alcinkaya

PhD student

Third-year PhD student at Doctoral School of Humanities, University of Warsaw, where he also teaches courses on history of American policing, American comic books, and academic writing. His research interests include American superhero and non-mainstream comics, science fiction, video games, and police power. His dissertation focuses on how American comic books unconsciously celebrate and promote police violence through visual representations of moments of brutal encounters between characters. Outside his academic career, Alcinkaya is also an English teacher at his own online language school called English with Mert.

Kinga Stępniak

PhD student

PhD student at the Department of Ecology at the Faculty of Biology at the University of Warsaw. She explores the world of wildlife and the interactions taking place in it. She is particularly interested in canids, wild and domesticated, and the interactions they have. She is a member of the Association for Nature "Wolf".

Magdalena Grabowska

PhD student

She has been associated with the Faculty of Economic Sciences for over five years. After completing her bachelor's and master's studies in the field of Computer Science and Econometrics, she decided to continue her university adventure at the Interdisciplinary Doctoral School on the Quantitative Psychology and Economics program. She deals with a niche field of economics with the graceful name "economics of happiness", and her dream is for this field to enter the scientific mainstream.

Maria Kubara

PhD student

Employed at the Faculty of Economic Sciences. She conducts research at the intersection of economics and regional studies. In her doctoral project, she deals with the impact of location on the chances of survival of technological startups in Warsaw. Combining machine learning methods with spatial analytics, she discovers how geographical factors affect the operation of enterprises. She is the winner of the Diamond Grant and the winner of the “Epainos Prize” awarded to the best young researchers in the field of regional studies.

Marianna Iaroslavska

Lawyer, scientist and enthusiast of innovation, as well as a partner and co-founder of the law firm "Lexpertise", which will be established this year - its goal is to combine law and new technologies. After several years of working in Magic Circle law firms, she gave up this path to work in the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights and fight against discrimination. She also runs a blog on Instagram - @marianna.studiuje.prawo, where she talks about the realities of a young lawyer's career, and also shares her experience with law students.

Martyna Dudziak-Kisio

Media expert, culture expert, trainer and popularizer of science. PhD student at the Doctoral School of Social Sciences at the University of Warsaw, associated with the Faculty of Journalism, Information and Book Studies. Scientifically, he deals with social changes taking place as a result of the technological revolution and aging societies.

Piotr Okniński

PhD

Researcher at the Faculty of History at the University of Warsaw, where he defended his doctoral thesis. He specializes in the social history of Poland and Central Europe from a comparative perspective. He is particularly interested in the history of memory and literate culture in urban communities. He was educated as a medievalist, but currently conducts research in the interepochal perspective. He is also interested in modern trends in academic teaching and the popularization of historical knowledge

Zbigniew Szkop

PhD

He is an environmental economist. He graduated with a master's degree in economics and environmental protection. Then he started doctoral studies at the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Warsaw, where in 2020 he defended his doctoral thesis on the valuation of the benefits that city residents derive from the presence of trees. Since then, he has been working as an assistant professor at the University of Warsaw, where he continues his research, constantly expanding his knowledge of why it is profitable to plant trees in cities.

Zuzanna Ruszkowska

PhD student

PhD student at the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences of the University of Warsaw with experience in biological and chemical sciences. For three years she has been associated with the Faculty of Biology, where she completed her Master's degree in biotechnology with a specialization in applied microbiology. She studies processes related to the production of value-added compounds from waste and by-products using microorganisms. For two years, she has been dealing with the subject of biorefinery, which is her main scientific interest.
