Enriqueta Mayuga

MD

Enriqueta Cartagena Mayuga was born in the Philippines in 1937. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines in 1962 and immigrated to the U.S. to complete her specialty training in New York and her chief residency and OB/GYN fellowship training at the University of Texas in San Antonio. She started her solo private practice in 1970 as the first female OB/GYN practitioner in Eastern Washington until her retirement 52 years later. She authored 7 books of essays, poems, and short stories which reflect her childhood in Japanese occupied Philippines during World War II and as an immigrant in the United States at the height of the civil rights movement in 1963. Her parents, Dr. Joaquin Cartagena, a pioneering physician, and Rosario Vendivil, a pharmacist and leading educator, were political and public figures. She is the youngest of five siblings and has been married to Simeon Mayuga for 60 years and has two children and five grandchildren.

Kristin Burnum-Johnson

Scientist

Dr. Kristin Burnum-Johnson is a Senior Scientist and Team Lead of the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory’s Metabolomics group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Kristin earned her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Vanderbilt University with Prof. Richard M. Caprioli in 2008, and then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at PNNL with Dr. Richard D. Smith in 2010. Kristin was selected to receive a 2019 Early Career Research Program award from the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science. At PNNL, her research is dedicated to characterizing the molecular landscape of heterogeneous samples using novel mass spectrometry approaches to address specific biological, medical, and environmental research questions.

Lewis Zirkle

A humanitarian and innovative orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Zirkle has spent his entire career advocating for surgeons in developing countries to enable them to care for injured and impoverished people. He founded SIGN Fracture Care in 1999 and has empowered more than 7,000 surgeons to provide healing surgery for more than 410,000 people with fractures.

Taryn Boonpongmanee

Student

Taryn Boonpongmanee is a senior at Deerfield Academy who is passionate about learning, spreading, and teaching Latin. She is a co-head of Deerfield’s Classics Club and the Editor-in-chief and founder of Calliope, a Classics literary magazine. She also helps run a nationwide student Classics society. Taryn was born and raised in Richland, Washington where there were no opportunities for her to learn Latin. She began learning Latin and Greek at Deerfield, and she hopes to extend the reach of Classics to geographically disadvantaged areas. She created Launching Love for Latin, an organization that advocates for increasing the accessibility of the subject and equality and diversity in the field. She wants to share her passion for Classics by becoming a teacher and an author who supports voiceless characters in ancient texts and underrepresented groups of learners, readers, and educators in Classics.
