Merrist Wood College Youth
x = independently organized TED event

Theme: The importance of young adults voices.

This event occurred on
June 30, 2023
Surrey, Surrey
United Kingdom

Over the last year through the Personal Development Programme we have been working towards giving young people the resources and the voice to navigate the world after college, not just preparing them for their careers but renting a home, challenging non-consensual advances and much more.

It made sense to finish the year with their voices being heard through a big platform, giving them a chance to shine in ways they might not have been given the opportunity to before. Sadly, we cannot fit 200-odd students on a stage, but they have got involved in a range of ways. Everything you see today has been created by students across the land faculty.

Speakers

Speakers may not be confirmed. Check event website for more information.

Alice Kinsell

Student
Alice has lived with Autism all her life and has realised some things about herself and the world around her. Alice has been at MW for a bit of a while now, so knows the ropes of it all and wants to share it with you!

Amber Ferre

Student
Amber has had an interesting life, to say the least, moving from country to country, culture to culture, and learning new and wonderful things along the way. With a focus on people treating each other fairly, she has been brought to the question “Why is this okay?”

Ash Wallace

Ash is a 19-year-old whose interests span a variety of interesting and diverse topics from how The Great Gatsby is just a book about raccoons to hockey and other team sports. They have chosen today to speak about an issue close to their heart: Dementia. Get the tissues ready, this one will be a heart wrencher.

Casey Harnett

Student
When Casey heard about the project their first reaction was, this is great. A place to speak about my special interest, and that is what they will be doing- Listen in and you might find the world is not what it all seems!

Megan Smith

Student
Megan's journey of self-confidence and friendship as the title suggest starts with toilet sandwiches and ends with ted talks. Her story may resonate with many of us with themes of bullying, self-deprecating self-talk, and the most amazing realisation that she is a Gucci bag.

Mia Box

Student
Mia has been with us for a few years and through it all comes back fighting. Her new passion is Asthma and her experience of it.

Paige Roake

Student
This will be Paige's final hurrah with us before she leaves to study game management at Sparsholt. When creating the piece Paige decided that it would be best to strip us of visuals and just listen to the message in the talk. This could be a triggering talk as there is a focus on consent and victimisation.

Sam Vincent

Student
Sam grew up in a conservative household; walking past his mailbox he noticed something strange, a pamphlet with pro-life propaganda. Feeling an urge to find out more Sam has landed with a big question. What is Freedom of Speech? Listen closely to his findings.

Tamarin Rees

Student
Tamarin is a 17-year-old whose special interest has been primates since they were seven years old, they are currently studying animal management level 3 BTEC and hope to one day become a primatologist. Tamarin's passion is undeniable, so take out a notebook, it is time to get learning!
