At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Alexandre Quintanilha

His parents (father from the Azores, mother from Berlin) always fostered his curiosity. Spent the first 25 years of his life in Southern Africa, the following 20 years in the Bay Area, California and the last 30 in Portugal. Was lucky enough to have led numerous research groups that allowed him to share ideas with inspiring people. With a Ph.D. in theoretical Physics he quickly moved to biophysics and physiology, focusing on oxidative stress to living organisms and our understanding of Risk. Launched and ran several multidisciplinary research centres and institutes, as well as new graduate and undergraduate courses at UC Berkeley, the LBNL and the University of Porto. As a current member of Parliament, he hopes to consolidate knowledge-based policies.

Bill McKibben

Bill McKibben is a contributing writer to The New Yorker, and a founder of Third Act, which organizes people over the age of 60 to work on climate and racial justice. He founded the first global grassroots climate campaign, 350.org, and serves as the Schumann Distinguished Professor in Residence at Middlebury College in Vermont. In 2014 he was awarded the Right Livelihood Prize, sometimes called the ‘alternative Nobel,’ in the Swedish Parliament. He's also won the Gandhi Peace Award, and honorary degrees from 19 colleges and universities. He has written over a dozen books about the environment, including his first, The End of Nature, published in 1989, and his latest book is The Flag, the Cross, and the Station Wagon: A Graying American Looks Back at his Suburban Boyhood and Wonders What the Hell Happened.

Catarina de Albuquerque

Catarina de Albuquerque is the CEO of the UN-hosted Sanitation and Water for All global partnership, mobilizing over 370 governments, civil society and private organizations, academia, and other actors, in joint high-level advocacy to realize the human rights to water and sanitation. Previously, Catarina was appointed by the Human Rights Council to become the first UN Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation. In 2010, she played a pivotal role in the recognition of water and sanitation as human rights by the UN General Assembly. Her work helped ensure that the rights to water and sanitation were incorporated into the Sustainable Development Goals. Between 2004 and 2008 she presided over the negotiations of the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which the UN General Assembly approved by consensus. She also participated in the development of several other international human rights standards.

Francisco Cordeiro de Araújo is a Guest Lecturer in the Law Faculty of the University of Lisbon, teaching International Public Law, European Union Law and Political Science. He is also Assistant Integrated Research Member in CIDP/ Lisbon Public Law. Among other topics, he is currently doing research on the right to a healthy environment as a justiciable human right. At 25 years old, he is a civic entrepreneur, embracing many missions. He is the President of Democracy 2.3 and the Founder of OS230, creating several projects of political literacy, civic engagement, democratic dialogue and connecting citizens with their representatives, whose efforts were recognized with the Youth Citizenship award 2021. He is a member of Lidera, a community of young Leaders focused on climate action, and a speaker that tries to raise awareness and spread knowledge in different areas.

Klaus Bosselmann

Klaus Bosselmann is Professor of Law and Founding Director of the New Zealand Centre for Environmental Law at the University of Auckland. He has done consulting work for the United Nations, the European Union and the governments of Germany and New Zealand and currently chairs the Ecological Law and Governance Association, the Global Ecological Integrity Group and the Earth Trusteeship Initiative. Klaus is the author or editor of 30 books and 150 articles on international environmental law, global governance, and ecological law. For his pioneering work he received numerous awards including the Inaugural Senior Scholarship Prize of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law and recently the International Carlowitz Sustainability Award. A long-term advocate of Earth governance, Klaus believes that states have a legal duty to protect the integrity of the Earth system. We, as civil society, must hold governments accountable for any neglect of taking this duty seriously.

Meri Wiikinkoski is an awarded architect and co-founder of Vapaa Collective together with Iines Karkulahti and Charlotte Nyholm. The collective is a creative actor combining theoretical and design work into artistic practice to envision new kinds of regenerative environments. They have chaired the Finnish Association of Architects' Future Committee, published an essay collection reflecting on the role of architecture in the climate crisis, and curated and designed several exhibitions, installations and discussions on the topic. This presentation explains why this step is so necessary and how it would fundamentally change the law and the obligations of nation states. It demonstrates that the combination of ‘commons’ and ‘heritage’ will give the climate system critical legal status around which a management regime can but built for the benefit of all, with particular concern for both intergenerational and global justice.

Tipping points in climate science normally refer to small changes in the Earth system that unleash much broader, typically damaging impacts that accelerate climate change. Well-known examples are rising sea levels due to disintegration of the Greenland and West Antarctica ice sheets, or the release of methane from the thawing permafrost. They help to underline the urgency of climate action. Today most people understand we must reduce emissions – and very quickly. In this talk, Tim will summarise recent evidence regarding climate tipping points, which supports declarations that we are in a ‘climate emergency’. Then he will turn to identifying positive social tipping points that will need to be triggered to have any hope of limiting global warming to well below 2ºC.

Tom Crowther is an ecologist exploring the connections between biodiversity and climate change. Whilst recognising that reducing the amount of emissions we are releasing into the atmosphere is key to achieving our climate goals, Tom is on a mission to make the case for nature as a vital tool in addressing climate change. Healthy ecosystems are major carbon sinks, they can contribute to 30% of our climate goals. Protecting and restoring nature is vital to stop runaway biodiversity loss. But investing in nature also gives us tools to sink atmospheric carbon and prevent the further release of stored carbon. Thriving ecosystems means thriving biodiversity. Thriving biodiversity underpins many of the processes that not only support human wellbeing, but also that remove carbon from the atmosphere. It's a virtuous feedback loop. Healthy nature results in an increased ecosystem capacity to sink carbon.
