Isabel van Waveren
Climate Researcher
Isabel is fascinated by Earth history, starting with the shells between the flowerbed in her grandparents garden. She studied Geology at the Leiden & Utrecht Universities. Climate was at the core of her “soft rockers” studies. Early on, she thought in terms of the present being a key to the past. The window into the past offered by pollen analysis & sedimentology caused her to choose two majors: (1) the vegetation response to Pleistocene climate cycles in the lake sediments of Longemer (France) and (2) the depositional setting of the Cretaceous San Esteban Fan delta System (Spain). For her PhD at Utrecht University, she identified all the organic particulates of ocean, delta, shelf & air samples from the Dutch-Indonesian Snellius II expedition to South East Asia. As a Fulbright scholar, Isabel studied zooplankton in the Gulf of Mexico at Florida State University, noting paleobotany collections connect climate in System Earth.
