Erik Grade 7
Middle School Student
Erik Huang was born in Argentina, raised in Japan, and has Taiwanese ancestors. He juggles 5 languages and is interested in environmental issues and social problems. Erik aims to advocate in the future through the Japanese instrument Koto that he plays, and through the sports he practices, including on the Japanese Olympic Committee youth team.
Harune Grade 11
High School Student
Harune was born in Hyogo prefecture, Japan, but was raised living in 2 continents. She grew up living in Czech Republic, Germany, the Philippines and Vietnam. Through her experience of living in different countries, she has witnessed multiple cases of discrimination misclassified as a "compliment". She wants to use her experience to raise awareness around this issue.
Maya Grade 11
High School Student
Maya has lived in Tokyo her whole life and is a junior at YIS. Going to an international school for all her life where friends come and go, she has learned the significance of keeping in contact with people through the use of social media -- thus leading her to develop an interest in understanding the impact of social media on teens.
Sana Grade 10
High School Student
Sana is a sophomore at Yokohama International School. Passionate about advocating against racial injustice, she has founded - and now leads the school's Anti-Bullying & Discrimination Campaign. With the fitting and timely steps taken, Sana is optimistic about the prospect of an anti-racist future.
Veronika Grade 7
Middle School Student
Veronika has lived in Japan her whole life, and become fluent in Japanese, English, Ukrainian, and Russian over the years. Despite the bullying she endured at her previous school about her appearance, as well as the war with Russia, Veronika maintains her positivity and is eager to teach everyone about her home country, Ukraine.
