tat tvam asi
Sanskrit: “thou art that in Hinduism, the famous expression of the relationship between the individual and the Absolute.
“The proclamation of 'Tat Tvam Asi' is correct that both Ātmā and Paramātmā are sat-cit-ānanda, meaning qualitative unity of the Soul and God. However, Ātmā, being localized Paramātmā consequently has localized consciousness. Paramātma, being the reservoir of Ātmā is situated within every heart and is aware of all its localized undivided parts. Therefore 'Tat Tvam Asi' falls short of understanding that the Soul is not equal to the Absolute Truth in all respects. For example, as a single drop of water has the same qualities as an ocean of water, so has our consciousness the qualities of God's consciousness but is proportionally subordinate. Furthermore, if Ātmā and Paramātmā were indeed one and the same, it would be possible for any ordinary person to claim omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence in equivalence to God. Scientifically we know this to be false. However, it does not claim the person is God, but that the person is unreal, so no contradictions with science.”
~ Śankaracarya
Explanation:
The meaning of this saying is that the Self - in its original, pure, primordial state - is wholly or partially identifiable or identical with the Ultimate Reality that is the ground and origin of all phenomena. The knowledge characterizes the experience of liberation or salvation that accompanies the Unio Mystica.
There is One awareness, and you are it. Fractal-like and appearing in the form of many individuals, yet still one. This Awareness has always existed and will exist for evermore. It does not mean that you are everything, for example, you do not matter, you are not time, you are not the Aether, and you are not the laws of the universe. You are only the Awareness. That, which knows is you.
This Universe & this world is like a training ground/playground for awareness. The awareness plays many roles, sometimes a flower, a man, a moon, sometimes a god. Anything that is aware, you are.
Science is to know. All knowing is science. Such science begins from foundational principles. The primary most foundational principle for any science is that reality exists. “Reality exists" is the foundation for all our physics. Einstein talks about space, matter, and energy which exist in our objective reality. Our perceptions may be different. Yet, the reality is what it is. One must not mistake perception with reality itself. Ideas are not what we know. Ideas are that by which we know. Tatvam Asi is essentially the principle of identity. Put another way, it is the non-contradiction principle. A thing is what it is (identity). A thing cannot be and not be the same thing at the same time in the same way (not a contradiction). It is either raining or not raining.
Tatva literally means that which exists i.e., reality. Similarly, sat means that which exists. Satya means to know that which exists. In other words, Satya is the conformation of the mind to reality. Hence Tatvam Asi simply states, “Reality is what it is. It exists independent of perceptions”.
