In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Alin Vaida

Festival director Jazz in the Park

Alin is the founder of the Jazz in the Park festival in Cluj Napoca and the executive director of Fapte Association, responsible for the implementation of the festival. He’s been working in the cultural sector since 2009, specifically in the music industry, being responsible for the organization of hundreds of concerts in Romania, and many festivals. He started his career in producing and organizing events, and in time he became a cultural entrepreneur, focusing now only on his own projects. His expertise stands in event production, attracting private funding, and managing financial applications. Also, his projects have an important community-organizing role, as he believes in the connection between arts and social engagement. His actions are concentrated on the revitalization of public spaces, developing the audience, productions for artists, and stimulating the civic spirit. In 2019 Jazz in the Park won the prize for the Best Small Festival in Europe at the European Festival Award.

Born in Oradea/Nagyvárad in 1967. Graduate of the Philology and History High School of the city. He is a Romanian journalist and television presenter, currently director of the Film Department of TVR 1.

Hilda Sterczer

Leader of the Hópárduc Foundation

Height and depth. Although in everyone’s life there are rough times and remarkable events, in Hild’s life these ups and downs were quite extreme. She went to the Himalayas and even stood at the peak of two mountains with heights of more than 8000 meters. At the same time, she experienced the real depth of human life, when her husband, Erőss Zsolt passed away. As a teacher, she met many children, and after the decease of her husband, she gathered all the things she learned from education and alpinism. This is how the wall climbing development-based Hópárduc method was born, that methodology was created with the help of physiotherapists and other specialists. More than 400 children are helped by this method so that they can experience better performance and more minor failures at school. Hilda believes that the secret of a satisfying life is self-identity.

Katalin Kovács PhD.

President of Mensa HungarIQa Association

Jurist, economist, healthcare manager. Currently works in the IT sector as a business analyst, and she is the president of the Mensa HungarIQa Association. Mensa is an international association, founded in 1946 in England. It has almost 140000 members worldwide. It’s not committed to any ideology, philosophy, political belief or religion, and it doesn’t force any common opinion on its members - the only condition for membership is having an IQ level that only 2 % of the people have. But what does it mean in everyday life to be “officially” intelligent? How can a high IQ level help you or restrict you? How are adaptability, openness to new ideas and reaction to changes related? Is it viable, and does it have a preserving force if we build a community based on only one characteristic: that we are more intelligent than 98 % of the population? And how can you manage an organization with 4500 members, where it is very common that 2 members have three different opinions on the same topic?

Katalin Vékás

She is a wife, mother, and cancer patient. Although she was declared asymptomatic, it defines her life, that 10 years ago she was diagnosed with cancer. Her everyday life is seemingly the same, but in reality, everything has changed: she is a wife, a mother, and a friend in a different way. She also sees the situation of cancer patients differently. Her mission is to make it possible for everyone to talk without any taboos about this topic, which concerns so many of us. To not be afraid, to be there – to be present, and last, but not least, to be ALIVE!

Mária Pető PhD.

Physics teacher

Pető Mária is a physicist and teacher at “Székely Mikó” High School in Sepsiszentgyörgy, as well as headmaster at the Covasna County Center for Gifted Students. The Science Club activity was started by her more than ten years ago, in order to provide students with a supportive and inspiring environment for implementing their creative and innovative ideas. A key element of her work is science popularization lectures and workshops. She is a regular speaker at the T.É.T. events held by the “Bod Péter” County Library with the Science Club students.

Máté Isztojka

Ethnography student

He is a gypsy young man who has been interested in folklore and culture since his childhood, and the world of fairy tales and poems was always close to him. He considers that every person and every culture can be known better by stories because everyone has a “self-story” that sums up the essence of their life. But there are also external influences that can affect the turning points of our story. One of the most important external influences was the fairy tales told by his grandfather, that Máté tries to perpetuate, and through these tales, he provides a more nuanced view of his culture. For Máté it’s important to emphasize that the process of learning is long and hard, but the key is to be open-minded, and – as his Ethnography professors say – we shouldn’t judge, but we should look for the common interface.

Örs Hunor Detre

Astronomer, physicist

Webb was successfully commissioned in June. It is the sharpest ever eye of humankind. When we hear about such a grandiose project, we think that success is granted. No, it is not. Why? When millions of parts work together, it is easy to overlook something. Webb is one of the most complex missions ever built. Even the engineers and scientists behind it were surprised by how beautifully Webb worked during its commissioning. As a child, he wanted to be an inventor like Bell or Tesla. After his studies in electrical engineering, physics and astronomy, his dream came true. He started working on the James Webb Space Telescope. Soon became the European electrical lead of the MIRI instrument, but was lucky to work in many other fields of Webb. The space instrument scientist is like a curious child. Only the goals and opportunities change with age, the level of curiosity does not. Future goals? He thinks it’s time to become an inventor.

Orsolya Ferenczy

Opera singer

She learned to love music at a very young age, the world of symphonic works, piano concertos and operas was on the agenda at home. She was born in Odorheiu Secuiesc and from here she set out, like in the fairy tales. She was aware that a career as an opera singer was complex and very difficult to succeed, especially coming from a small town with limited opportunities. It’s good to have social capital and good financial backing – she didn’t have any of these, nor a proper family background. But she had something important: her faith. And her talent, which she received as a gift from "above". She felt that this gift was given to her to share with others. To heal with music, with her voice. To offer happiness, smiles, tears, and wonders to people. To bring joy, smiles, tears and wonder to people's life. "If I can share one moment of beauty out of a three-hour opera performance, then I am worth being there."

Péter Korpádi

Plant-based Nutritionist

During his higher education studies in Denmark, Peter discovered, that changing the world starts with changing ourselves. Therefore he went on a fully plant-based diet and gave up his dreams of big city life, and working in the hotel industry. Instead, he moved to a remote village, where he tries to become self-sustainable. He also became a digital nomad, working as an online nutritionist to help other people master the revolutionary plant-based approach to a healthier life and a much more sustainable world.

Raed Arafat Dr.

Founder of SMURD

Dr. Raed Arafat is the Secretary of State and the Head of the Department for Emergency Situations in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Being specialized in anesthesia and critical care and having a European Master in disaster medicine, he is the founder of Mobile Emergency Service for Resuscitation and Extrication (SMURD), established since 1990. Starting in 2007, he coordinated the activity of many institutional structures and strategic programs for Emergency Situations, among them: the Healthcare System for Emergencies and Disasters in the Ministry of Health, as well as the Department for Emergency Situations that coordinates the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, General Inspectorate of Aviation, Emergency Medical Services and Mountain Rescue in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Sándor Haáz

Music teacher

Choir director, and music teacher Haáz Sándor was born in Székelyudvarhely/Odorheiu Secuiesc in 1955. He learned to play the violin and the viola at the Art High School in Marosvásárhely/Târgu Mureș, and he devoted his spare time to ethnography. He majored at the music faculty of the teacher training college, and as a student, he participated in founding the early music ensemble. He started working as a music teacher in Szentegyháza/Vlăhița in 1978, where the school director asked him to establish a brass band. Meanwhile, he also started a string ensemble. The school’s choir and the ensemble performed together in 1982 for the first time, and the group established this way was named Children's Philharmonic in 1983.
