Theme: The Ripple Effect

TEDxDurhamUniversity returns with its annual conference at St Chad's College, with this year's theme entitled 'The Ripple Effect'.

This event explores how taking positive action in your life can have multiple positive consequences, ricocheting into other opportunites for change and growth, as well as the wider impact of one's actions on the community.

Amanda Ellison

Professor, author and physiologist

Amanda is a current professor of neuroscience at Durham University as well as physiologist. Her research interests include the neuroscientific basis of vision and visual cognition. Alongside this, Amanda is an author of two published books and numerous highly esteemed journal articles. She is also Executive Director of the Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing which uses interdisciplinary approaches to foster research on human health and welbeing in both developed and developing countries.

Harriet Dyer

Comedian, author and mental health activist

Harriet is an award-winning comedian, writer and mental health advocate She's had numerous critically acclaimed shows, works for the majority of big clubs and festivals, regularly gigs overseas, and prides herself in being totally original! Harriet has bipolar disorder and centres lots of her comedy around mental health, as she sees humour as really helpful in getting us through hard times. She believes it has a role in fighting stigma, and helps portray to others the reality of living with mental health issues day to day.

Louise Hewitt

Co-founder of the Innocence Project London

Louise is the co-founder and director of the Innocence Project London (IPL), a pro-bono law clinic which is dedicated to investigating wrongful convictions. The IPL provides an opportunity for law and criminology students to undertake clinical legal education in the context of investigating claims of innocence from convicted individuals who have maintained their innocence but exhausted the appeals process. Louise is also currently a senior lecturer at the University of Greenwich and is passionate about improving the teaching experience through the Innocence Project.

Sebastian Payne

Journalist

Sebastian is a political journalist and the Whitehall editor for the Financial Times. A proud Durham alumnus, Sebastian kickstarted his journalistic career working for Palatinate and Purple Radio before going on to work for The Daily Telegraph and becoming the online editor of The Spectator magazine. Since joining the FT, Sebastian was named one of the most influential journalists in London by the Evening Standard and specialised on the North-South divide in British politics.
