In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Justine Ramos

Maples Met Student

My name is Justine Rory Ramos. I am 16 years old—born in the Philippines but have lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba my whole life. I am passionate, determined and ambitious. I have an adoration for all things literature and I love learning new things and exploring new places. I am the author of “Angles of Reality: Winnipeg Voices of Resilience and Stories of Courage” which is a nonprofit book filled with the genuine stories of people living in poverty. Angles of Reality is a gateway to understanding the challenges that those in need face so that we can take a step towards breaking down the biases that shape our understanding of each other and ourselves. All proceeds of sales are donated to Oak Table, a charity organization in Winnipeg dedicated to providing hospitality, support and advocacy for those in need of a safe, respectful community.

Kevin Chief

Mentor in Residence

Kevin Chief is Principal of Chief Partnerships Manitoba Incorporated. Born and raised in Winnipeg’s North End, he has considerable public sector and community experience. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, representing Point Douglas, and was appointed to Cabinet as Minister of Children and Youth Opportunities in 2012, Minister responsible for the City of Winnipeg in 2013, and Minister of Jobs and the Economy in 2014. Following public service, Kevin was the Vice President at the Business Council of Manitoba. Chief is the co-founder of the Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre and is chairperson for the Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development Inc.

Sarah Fine

Academic

Dr. Sarah Fine is an educator and scholar working at the intersection of practice and research. She currently directs the San Diego Teacher Residency, hosted at the High Tech High Graduate School of Education, and also teaches courses in educational leadership at the University of California San Diego and at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Sarah has written for a wide range of publications, including The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Chalkbeat, Education Week, Edutopia, and Educational Leadership, as well as scholarly journals such as The Journal of Educational Change and The Harvard Educational Review. Her recent book, coauthored with Jal Mehta, is In Search of Deeper learning: The Quest to Transform the American High School. In 2019, the book won the Grawemeyer award in Education.

Sideny Leggett

Graduate Student

Sidney is finishing her final year of undergraduate studies in a student-designed major in Applied Computer Science and Data Analysis at the University of Winnipeg. She has worked as a Junior Epidemiologist for over three years and has worked as a research assistant at the University of Winnipeg, University of Manitoba, and Queens University. She also works for Waterways recreation and is passionate about Indigenous youth involvement in learning traditional knowledge through canoeing and being on the land. Sidney is Métis and believes in the importance of inclusion of Indigenous peoples in STEM fields, and the importance of having diverse views within the STEM world. She hopes to break barriers in academia to be inclusive to Indigenous People to pursue higher education. Sidney will be discussing the barriers that exist in academia for Indigenous people, and the steps that can be put in place to better the academic world.

My name is Vy Gomes and I am a grade 12 student at the Maples Met school. I am extremely passionate about social and political issues. My goal is to create a progressive culture around educational sites wherever I can, a culture which constantly wishes to learn and make itself a safe space for all students and people. I am currently interning and working for a task force assembled by the Seven Oaks School Division which focuses on initiatives related to Anti-Racism.
