In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Angela Schoffelman

Angela Schoffelman has a passion for volunteering, with a particular love for serving populations that have historically struggled to be seen and heard. She has facilitated a successful Toastmasters speaking club at the maximum security Jameson Annex of the SD State Prison since 2019, and has started a second club in another area of the SD State Prison in 2022. She continues to be a fierce advocate for all justice impacted individuals.

Kristina Schaefer

Kristina Schaefer serves as General Counsel & Chief Risk Officer for First Bank & Trust, a $4.0 billion organization headquartered in Brookings, South Dakota. She is a member of several local, state and national professional organizations, serving on a number of committees and advisory councils, as well as Chair of the South Dakota Bankers Association and a member of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Community Bank Advisory Council. Kristina regularly coaches Girls on the Run, serves on the Helpline Center Board of Directors, and mentors children as part of the Lutheran Social Services School Based Mentoring Program. She enjoys attending Minnesota Twins baseball games with her family, which includes her husband and two daughters. In her free time, Kristina enjoys good books and running adventures with her friends. And, yes…Kristina also regularly feels like an imposter.

Manaal Ali

Manaal Ali is a first-generation Muslim-American woman who is relearning and redefining what it means to be an impactful social activist. She takes inspiration from her faith, Islam, which is rooted in the principles of justice, authenticity, and kindness. Through the active practice of these values, Manaal hopes to foster change in the global women’s rights movement and inspire other young Muslim women to do the same.

Mike Broderick

Mike Broderick experienced an out-of-hospital- cardiac arrest in May of 2017. He is a survivor. One of the lucky 100 out of a 1,000. Mike has a passion to share his story and to help increase the survival rate of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, by educating people and encouraging people to have the courage to help save a life.

Paul Anders

Dr. Anders is the Sister Wilma Lyle Associate Professor of Philosophy at Mount Marty University in Yankton, South Dakota. He teaches in the University’s Theology and Philosophy Department, and Benedictine Leadership Institute. This talk crystalizes ideas he has been teaching for more than fifteen years.

Serene Thin Elk

Serene Thin Elk MA, LPC-MH, LAC, QMHP is the Chief Behavioral Health Officer at SD Urban Indian Health and is an enrolled member of the Ihanktonwan Oyate (Yankton Sioux Tribe). She is passionate about addressing patterns of intergenerational transmission, and finding ways to help individuals, families and communities heal from the effects of historical traumas. Her primary role is being Ina (mother) to her beautiful children. She strongly believes that healing begins within each individual, which extends to family, community and society. She has worked in various settings since obtaining her Masters degree in Expressive Therapies in 2008 from Lesley University. Her passion resides in continuing to help others heal mental health and addiction through the L/Dakota life-ways.

Tim Schut

On June 21, 2021 Tim Schut was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech, a very rare brain neurodegenerative disease. Medical Professionals first discovered PPAOS as a brain neurodegenerative disease in 2010 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Tim has been given a 10-15 year life expectancy since his PPAOS diagnosis. His goal in that time is to cherish his family, build up his community, and now bring awareness to this disease as there is currently no developed treatments or cure.

Zach Dresch

Zach Dresch is a stand up comedian, musician, actor, talk show and podcast host born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He grew up a fan of sketch and stand up comedy, citing groups like the Kids in the Hall and comedians such as Mitch Hedberg and Demetri Martin as huge influences. He also plays in multiple bands, two of them being the active groups known as the Disarmed and Sharon’s Little Helpers. He is currently the co-host of the locally produced Late Night Boomin, and he weekly hosts trivia at Fernson Downtown. He is most widely known as the Flu Bug on billboards and TV all across South Dakota.
