In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Camille Carvalho

Student
Camille Carvalho is a dedicated and energetic senior at Mission Vista. When she is not at school or studying for her biomedical and honors classes, she enjoys playing soccer with her competitive club team in Irvine. Camille seeks being a leader on campus and is president of the California Scholarship Federation. She aspires to major in Animal Science and her interest in veterinary medicine has led her to an internship at a local animal hospital. On the weekends, Camille looks forward to working her part time job at Old Navy. She volunteers weekly at REINS Therapeutic Horsemanship Program in Fallbrook, which allows her quality time with the horses and the children who ride them. Her favorite hobby is to watch Marvel movies and try different boba shops around Oceanside and Vista.

Donavan Fanella

Student
Donavan Fanella is a sophomore who you would be liable to recognize on sight, with the iconic combination of the comb over, Hawaiian shirts, and khakis. Donavan finds enjoyment simply from talking to people, getting to share the most abstract, metaphysical ideas to the most minute, irrelevant factoids, but very rarely in the middle of those two. He is captivated by being a well-rounded learner, which is why he loves school so much but still has trouble deciding on a career. He takes pride in a job well done, which is what earned him student of the year in 8th grade, several Speech and Debate awards, and successes in various writing competitions. At school, outside of being in around 10 different clubs at a given time, his real passion is Speech and Debate, which he sees more as a learning opportunity than a sport. Among his many interests are history, 20th century international politics, watching debates, academic writing, collecting records from the 1920’s and 30’s, and neuroscience.

Friday Kriedeman

Student
Friday Kriedeman is a senior who loves Computers and making them stop working in an attempt to hack them. They are the secretary of MVHS’s Computer Science Club and a member of Amnesty International and the Radical Education Club. They have a passion for werewolves, cowboys, and weird music. In their free time they like to hang out with their online friends, produce music under the name i.luv.werewolves, and learn how to hack computers. They hope to carry this passion forward in life, be employed as an ethical hacker, and use their skills to help everyone they can.

Jeevan Rao

Student
Jeevan Rao is a hard-working senior at Mission Vista that basically overworks himself but has managed to persevere through it all. Being an honor roll student, a Certified Trainer at Raising Cane’s, the Secretary for the MVHS Amnesty International chapter, one of the main varsity on his school’s Speech and Debate team, and a member of numerous other clubs on campus, Jeevan certainly has his hands full. Despite all of this pressure, he always tries to be a better person every day, valuing kindness, empathy, and compassion as his main traits. In his free time, Jeevan loves to hang out with his friends, study trains/medicine, and look up random trivia; he hopes to put his hard work and dedication to good use when he enters the medical field to become a physician. Jeevan is thrilled to be able to share his story of balancing pressure through TEDx, and hopes to show how his audience can recognize, and balance their own pressures.

Liza Anits

Student
Liza Anits, one of the most spirited seniors you will find on campus. She has many friends, a loud voice, and a polyglot obsession which has earned her a Student of the Month Award in the city of Vista! Alone in her bedroom, and in the crevices of nature and life, she finds consolation and joy in observing the world take its course. She is fascinated by anthropology and microbiology, and hopes to one day work as a forensic microbiologist (long name, always makes people confused). In her spare time, not hogged by contemplating the existential significance of humanity and the very intricate ties of the human mind with her partner, Liza likes to play tennis, hang out with friends, and doodle in her sketchbook. At the end of the day, she hopes to change the way people see things, whether it be a long conversation, or a quick wave of the hand and a grin.

Matthew Wang

Student
Matthew Wang is a spirited and hardworking senior at Mission Vista High School. Publishing a biology paper at UCSD, starting a non-profit baking business, and being featured in the San Diego Magazine as an influential and inspiring high schooler for his advocacy about Kawasaki Disease, Matthew is somewhat of a science guy. He is fascinated by the field of Infectious Diseases and Neuroscience and hopes to one day become a Pediatric Cardiologist. On the side, he enjoys playing and teaching tennis, surfing with friends, and exploring new hiking trails with his family. A secret talent that nobody knows about is that Matthew is a baking wizard, who loves making wedding cakes and french desserts in his free time. To say Matthew has a sweet tooth is an understatement, especially when it comes to french macaroons. At the end of the day, he hopes to push others to step out of their comfort zone, find new hobbies and passions, and ultimately inspire people to make a difference in this world.

Morlae Letuli

Student
Morlae Letuli is a stellar senior who devotes his time and resources into the school and city environment. Morlae serves as a deacon at his church and has volunteered in many community services, including a trip to Native American reservations in Chinle. Not only does he serve his community, he also serves his school as the Senior Class President in ASB. He is dedicated to staying physically active by doing weight lifting, Crossfit, biking, and much more. If he isn’t devoting himself to being a gym rat, he also creates music by playing: ukulele, guitar, drums, and cajon. He doesn’t have a favorite genre of music, but his most listened to type of music is early 2000s R&B.

Shiva Rajesh

Student
Shiva Rajesh is a sensational Junior at Mission Vista High School. Passionate about learning new things and changing the world around him, Shiva started a video-based tutoring program and organizes STEM-based lessons and projects at Mission Vista. He enjoys cultivating and admiring plants outside of school, as well as aiming to make himself trilingual. You can typically spot him outside, running or hiking across town, and find him on night drives and walks near the beach at night. Shiva often finds himself pulled towards any device in his vicinity, including during his sandwich making sessions or whilst socializing with friends. Realizing succumbing to devices and screens is a common problem, he researched to understand the reasons for our proclivity to such attractive things, transforming the lives of many previous “screenagers” and “scrudults", students and teachers alike; eventually being convinced to give a larger Talk to reach a larger audience.

Skylar Bransford

Student
Skylar Bransford is a freshman at Mission Vista High School for the 2021-2022 school year, and an enthusiastic performer. She has a passion for being onstage, and participating in the arts. She is an avid reader and writer, who expresses herself through written stories as well as poetry, often bringing her poems to life in the form of slam. She hopes to expand her love for performing in high school, as she was Drama Club President and a class orator for her grade in middle school. On campus she is an active participant in her academic courses, as she enjoys literature and investigative thinking, as well as in her elective courses like Drama or Creative Writing. She will always feel most expressive while onstage, or doing any form of public speaking, as it helps her bring feelings and ideas to life.

Tyler Vallas

Student
Tyler Vallas is a junior at Mission Vista. As assistant editor-in-chief of the school’s yearbook, he spends a great amount of time drafting and editing pages for the book. Also a lover of engineering and physics, Tyler hopes to one day contribute to the field of interplanetary and interstellar travel. As a member of the National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation, he enjoys tutoring other students and loves helping others grow confident in their math and science skills. In his free time, he loves hanging out with friends and listening to music, but above all, he values education and wants others to strive for a world in which education is accessible and affordable for all.
