In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Maggie Johnson

Marine biologist
Maggie Johnson is a marine biologist and Postdoctoral Scholar at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. She has devoted her career to tackling the question, how are humans altering the face of coral reefs? Maggie studies coral reefs across the globe, from the central tropical Pacific to Caribbean Panama, and seeks to understand what role humans are playing in the rapid degradation of these valuable ecosystems. As an avid scuba diver, she combines her underwater observations of how coral reef communities are changing over time with cutting-edge lab experiments that show how human-induced changes in ocean pH, temperature, and oxygen can dramatically alter the survival of reef-building corals and algae. The long-term prognosis for coral reefs in this era a rapid environmental change is grim. But Maggie’s research provides hope that natural resilience will allow some coral reefs to persist into the future, particularly if we are able to mitigate environmental change locally
