The Catcher in the Rye provides one of the most intimate glimpses into one of America's most reclusive authors, J. D. Salinger. It has been universally recognized as the handbook for angsty teenagers but it is so much more than 200 pages of a whiny 16 year old. The novel is a deeper reflection of Salinger’s own youth, his complicated relationship with growing up and the generational trauma affected by World War II. Undeniably autobiographical, Salinger drew on his personal experiences fighting in the war and his New York upbringing to pen the character of Holden Caulfield. He created a character that shows the comfort in intergenerational connections and the teenage identity that is shared with all of us.

“For a transitory enchanted moment, man must have held his breath in the presence of this continent, compelled into an aesthetic contemplation he neither understood nor desired, face to face for the last time in history with something commensurate to his capacity for wonder.”
― F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
Why is it that we as human beings stray away from the wonders that surround us, whether it be consciously or unconsciously, and reject the prospect of hope so frequently? Maybe it's because we feel that in looking at the world's beauties, its atrocities and inadequacies were somehow being ignored. Yet, the world is not entirely a place of despair and hopelessness so long as we do not wish it to be.

2020 was a year like no other. The way we live and function as a society completely changed. Nothing was “normal” anymore. Even though it seemed as if every corner of our lives were filled with darkness, we continued to hold each other up - showing love and support for each and every one of us. Because 2020 was the year that taught us the importance of unity - the importance of working together to accomplish a greater goal. I am Yameen Khurshid, a grade 9 student here at RHHS, and I want to tell you that the only way we can climb life's tallest mountains of challenges is together. That is unity - our greatest strength.
