Theme: Mistakes that Change(d) the World

Hosted by the International School of Monaco, this TEDxYouth event will feature 11 students aged between 10 and 18 give their interpretation of this theme. Our virtual event will be live streamed on February 13th.

Hi, my name is Ana and I am Romanian. I am 10 years old and I am in year 6. I love to draw and paint, I like gymnastics, I like to dance (salsa and contemporary dance) and of course I like to do theatre and acting. I want to be a speaker because I try to improve my communication and public speaking skills, try to conquer my fear of slight stage fright and to be with my friends. I think this is a very unique theme and I think it is a very good one too because it is a theme not many have done and, in this case, it allows us to realise that mistakes don’t always end in awkwardness or humiliation.

Hi, my name is Esther and I am 16 in year 12. I am French and Austrian and my passions are politics and poetry. I want to give a special perspective on the theme of this TEDx. I want to bring originality, something different from the this-mistake-happened-it-did-this which I think would be quite boring. I also love speaking to audiences and writing speeches, and those are skills I really want to improve; and of course, it's a fantastic opportunity to work with someone as amazingly talented as Alicia! It's quite an interesting theme, with many possibilities to explore. I was quite wary that the speeches would be redundant in their structures, with the exposition of a mistake followed by how it changed the world. But I'm happy to hear from my colleagues on the committee that all the speeches were amazing!

Hello, my name is Georgia and I am 14 years old. I am from Sydney, Australia, and am in year 9 at ISM. I want to be a speaker for TEDxYouth@ISMonaco because aside from horse riding, debating and public speaking are my passions. I have attended many different conventions and MUN (Model United Nations) conferences to debate with people from other schools in places all around the world. The reason I love debating is that it enables me to see things from a different perspective and it can change my thoughts on many different political and social topics. I think the topic “Mistakes that change(d) the world” is an exciting topic to have. I think having this as the topic up for discussion is going to be intriguing because not everyone will perceive things the same, but will have the opportunity to hear from other people’s perspectives. I am therefore looking forward to taking part in such an exciting event!

Hi, my name is Ian and I am 17 years old and in year 12. I am American and left the US when I was 9. I would like to be a speaker for TEDxYouth so as to share a message I believe will be important to the audience and a message that others can learn something from. A message that is unique and inspiring as well as informative. Personally, I believe that this theme is quite interesting as even the smallest of events, ones that we do not even know of, have changed the world. By speaking of mistakes in a way that shows their power as a positive or negative force I believe a message can be drawn out to the audience on how we perceive mistakes in a culture that fears failure. It will be an interesting topic to present and learn about from the other speakers as there are a number of viewpoints that can be taken with this fascinating topic.

Hello, my name is Katerina and I am British and Russian. I am 16 years old, and in year 12. I am passionate about music especially singing and guitar, drama, art, sports and cooking. I enjoy public speaking and I believe that this is a great initiative in Monaco to inspire people my age in their life. I think that this is a fun theme, as it can be interpreted in different manners. A mistake has many meanings, and it can be something that has been proven to be a life lesson. So this theme can allow inspirational and educational speeches.

Hello, my name is Leila. I am 11 years old and in year six, I am half French half English. I love to read, write, sing and I love rock climbing and animals. I wanted to try out TEDx because I love to write and I also like singing and speaking but I get very very shy and fidgety in front of a crowd. I wanted to learn to be less shy and panicky when I spoke in front of a crowd plus I had never done anything like TEDx before and I thought that it would be a fun new experience for me. I think the theme Mistakes that Change(d) the World is a great choice since it allows us to learn about a mistake and it is a good chance for us to write about something new. Also you learn that mistakes are just as important in building this modern world as things done intentionally and it's a nice idea have in your head "I don't have to be perfect, the things I do don't have to be perfect, these people were not perfect and look at what they did for this world." is what I now think when I look at my speech.

Hi, My name is Margherita and I am Italian. I am 11 years old and I am year 6. I enjoy performing and reading! I would like to be a speaker at TEDxYouth@ISMonaco because I love performing in front of an audience and think I could bring a lot to the table. I think that just because what you make is a mistake doesn't mean the outcome will always be negative and I feel as if not everyone understands that. Therefore, I think this theme could show people that not all mistakes have a negative outcome.

My name is Natasha, I’m 14 years old and in year 10. I’m English, and my passion is painting, but I love listening to music too. The reason that I’d like to be a speaker for TEDx Youth is because I want to take part in the sharing of new ideas and new perspectives with people from all over the globe. Being able to talk about something that I find interesting and then sharing it with others would be such an incredible experience, and I hope to spread that interest so that they have something new to share with the world as well. I feel that the theme chosen (mistakes that changed the world) is going to be quite challenging to research, but once the speaker has chosen their topic, I’m sure that new thoughts and fascinating ideas can come from our unique theme.

Hello! My name is Salomé, I’m 15 years old and am in year 10 at ISM. I was born in France to a Belgian mother and a French father but moved to England at 6 months old hence making it an important part of me. My passions include music as I strive to express myself through the melodious sounds of my trumpet and piano, art as there are no rules and no limits to what can be achieved, and of course, public speaking as nothing surpasses the thrill of defeating your nerves as you stand on a stage, listened to and heard. When I found out ISM would be hosting a TEDx event, I refused to let the opportunity go past me and having watched countless TED talks before, it was like a dream coming true before my eyes. Initially, when the theme was announced, I had no idea what I would talk about, but as I began researching potential speech topics I was left bewildered at the amount of unintentional events that have shaped the world into what it is now.

Hello my name is Sophia. I attend the International School of Monaco at the class 6C. I am half dutch and half Moroccan. I speak 3 languages which are French, English and dutch. I really want to be a speaker for TEDxYouth@ISMonaco speaker because it can give you opportunities, to gain experience , develop skills , improve my career prospects, build confidence and meet new people and spread my ideas. I loved the subject what mistakes changed the world because it was a bit challenging and I love doing challenges.
