Theme: Visions

The decade has come to a close, and it seems that it has brought its fair share of challenges and triumphs. For every Greta Thunberg, we have a Donald Trump. 2020 is the beginning of a new era, and it will undoubtedly be shaped by factors such as climate change, equal rights, and technological advancements.

TEDxUWCSEADover 2020 will explore what it means to exist in a decade where our future is so uncertain. How does the past shape our future? How does the anticipation for a desired future shape our past? What does this all mean for us in the present? Our search for answers will span across all of time itself.

We present to you: Visions 2020.

Beatrice Hulme

Student

Bea Hulme is currently a grade 12 student at UWC. In her last year of high school, she is aiming to make as much of a positive impact on the people around her as she can. Having lived in a multitude of places, and being the epitome of a third culture kid, she is passionate about issues that are prevalent in more than just one place. As a lover of literature, she finds herself constantly thinking about the words used in our daily lives, and what impact these choices can have.

Caroline Lee

Associate Professor, Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School

Caroline Lee graduated with PhD from Baylor College of Medicine and did her post-doctoral training with Dr. Michael Gottesman at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health. She currently also holds joint appointment as Principal Investigator at the National Cancer Centre as well as an Associate Professor at the Cancer and Stem Cell Biology Program at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. She has ~100 peer reviewed publications and research focuses on the functional genomics of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and pharmacogenetics. Her laboratory identified FAT10 as a molecule that is over-expressed in HCC and other inflammation associated cancers and demonstrated it plays a role in TNF-α induced chromosome instability.

Juliana Lisboa

Product Strategy and Operations Lead at Google

Juliana Lisboa is a Product Strategy and Operations Lead at Google. Brazilian, with a major in Marketing, she took an unusual path by working in technology across multiple countries and cultures in Asia Pacific. She shares how curiosity can help break bias and shape a more inclusive future.

Pia Miller

Student

Pia Miller is a 17 year old student at United World College South East Asia. In her talk, Pia hopes to shed light on issues surrounding mental health by recounting her own experience and the important life lessons that they have taught her. Pia aims to give her listeners advice on how to build a life worth living by asserting oneself in the day to day. She has completed an intensive month-long course of Dialectical Behavioural Therapy and continues to practice its teachings.

Vladan Babovic

Hydroinformatics Scientist

Vladan Babovic is a leading hydroinformatics scientist. He has been at the head of the field since the 1990s, leading data-driven research. Recently, his research on flexibility and real options pertaining to decision-making under deep uncertainties in water- and climate-related domains is gaining recognition internationally.
