TEDxProvincetown: HyperLocal seeks to highlight innovation in local food systems, energy solutions, waste management, government, non-profits, education, art, film, and more!

TEDx is a grassroots initiative, created in the spirit of TED’s overall mission to research and discover “ideas worth spreading.” TEDx brings the spirit of TED to local communities around the globe through TEDx events. These events are organized by passionate individuals who seek to uncover new ideas and to share the latest research in their local areas that spark conversations in their communities. TEDx events include live speakers and recorded TED Talks, and are organized independently under a free license granted by TED. These events are not controlled by TED, but event organizers agree to abide by our format, and are offered guidelines for curation, speaker coaching, event organizing and more. They learn from us and from each other. More than 3000 events are now held annually.

Julian Cyr

Julian Cyr (he/him/his) serves in the Massachusetts Senate representing Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. Julian grew up in Truro working at his family's local business, Adrian's Restaurant. First elected to the State Senate on November 8, 2016, Julian is now serving in his third term and is among the youngest senators in the 40-member body. He is the Senate Assistant Majority Whip; Chair of the Joint Committee on Mental Health, Substance Use and Recovery; Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Racial Equity, Civil Rights, and Inclusion; Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Elder Affairs; and serves on committees with oversight of health care policy, public health, telecommunications and energy, COVID-19 emergency management, and redistricting.

Julie Wake

As the Executive Director of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, Julie works to strengthen the visibility, reach, and influence of Cape Cod’s regional arts foundation by building a strong community network; raising funds to invest in meaningful artistic and cultural initiatives; and advocating at the local, state and national level for more resources to enhance the impact that the Cape’s creative economy has on our region and beyond.

Nick Anguelov, Ph.D.

Dr. Nikolay (Nick) Anguelov is Associate Professor in the department of Public Policy at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Dr. Anguelov earned his Ph.D. in Policy Studies, concentration Regional Economic Development, as well as an MPA and a MS in Applied Economics and Statistics from Clemson University in 2012. Dr. Anguelov is an interdisciplinary scholar whose research focuses on the adjacencies of economics, politics, and diplomacy. His academic publications span a variety of global public policy issues such as renewable energy proliferation, corporate taxes, economic sanctions and incentives, soft power, marijuana decriminalization, the global governance of multinational corporations, and international fashion economics. He is the author of six academic books, which include The Dirty Side of the Garment Industry: Fast Fashion and Its Negative Impact on Environment and Society (Taylor & Francis, 2015) and The Sustainable Fashion Quest: Innovations in Business and Policy (Routledge, 2022).

Oren Sherman

Oren Sherman has designed exclusive artwork for a wide variety of clients that include Stueben Glass, PepsiCo, the Disney Corporation, the Olympics, Visa, Hermès, Mobil Oil, and the U.S. Postal Service among others, developing custom artwork that is colorful, sophisticated, and contemporary. He is an alumnus and professor at the acclaimed Rhode Island School of Design where he recently launched an innovative giving campaign kicked off by leaving his own digital IP to the institution. His work lives at the intersection between visual storytelling, art and architecture, focusing on applying two-dimensional work in a three-dimensional way using the tools of narrative, color, and pattern to create an experiential space.

Patty O'Connor

A San Diego native, Patty brings 25 years of experience to her role as Chief Supply Chain Officer at Feeding San Diego. Since joining the organization in April 2021, Patty has applied her experience in the consumer goods sector to the non-profit world, improving forecasting, planning and inventory turns for San Diego County’s largest hunger-relief and food rescue organization and only Feeding America affiliate in the region, which sees millions of pounds of food go through its distribution center every month. She has also focused on sourcing new food vendors to provide better variety to the people the non-profit serves, as well as expanding the organization’s food rescue program, with the eventual goal of rescuing food from every store, wholesaler, and distributor in San Diego County. Patty has her Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Santa Clara University with a minor in Spanish. After completing her undergraduate studies, she immediately went through the Management Training Program at National Semiconductor. Following that, she earned her MBA in International Business from Thunderbird Graduate School. Early on in her career, she worked at Levi Strauss & Co. in San Francisco, first on the Offshore Sourcing Planning & Analysis Team and later in product management. In that role, she traveled to many factories in Latin America, utilizing her Spanish to determine optimal production quantities and flow. Subsequent roles at other international companies, including the world’s largest sourcing company, Li & Fung, had Patty developing and sourcing all types of products in the consumer goods space from concept to delivery. During this time, she traveled the world to meet with factories in 25 countries, always fascinated to learn new cultures and ways of working. At this point in her career, Patty is thrilled to bring her decades of experience to a mission-driven, non-profit organization. Her current role has found her in a career where her passion is equal to her skillset. She has long been invested in giving back to her community, thanks to her father, Joe O’Connor. Joe started rescuing food almost 20 years ago, arranging a pickup every Tuesday and Saturday morning at his local grocery store and bringing the rescued food to a non-profit where it was given to people facing hunger. Through this example, Patty learned early on that the most important job in life is to give back to those in need. She currently leads a team that helps rescue 2.5 million pounds of food every month, including from the same grocery store her father frequented all those years ago.

Rick Miller, LISCW

Richard C. Miller is a psychotherapist in private practice, host of the Secrets of the Masters video series, founder and executive director of Gay Sons And Mothers, and co-host of the podcast Modern Couples: What Your Therapist Never Told You. His TEDx talk, The Mother Factor, grew out of his work with his nonprofit, which collects, celebrates, and shares worldwide narratives of gay men and their mothers to support LGBTQ+ training and awareness, enrich myriad diverse communities, and enable rapprochement, understanding, and healing. He is a frequent speaker at conferences for a myriad of academic and professional organizations and author of Unwrapped: Integrative Therapy with Gay Men and Mindfulness Tools for Gay Men in Therapy, and writes a regular column for Psychology Today.

Tara Vargas Wallace

Tara Vargas Wallace is originally from the Bronx, NY but moved to Cape Cod almost 25 years ago. Tara is a 2007 graduate of Cape Cod Community College, 2020 graduate of Leadership Cape Cod, was awarded the 2020 “Unsung Hero Award” by the Barnstable County Human Rights Advisory Commission. Tara was also a “40 under 40” winner in 2020 by Cape & Plymouth Business Magazine. Tara’s professional background has been in working with marginalized populations with severe socioeconomic challenges; family trauma, addiction and recovery, domestic and sexual violence, barriers to employment, and extreme housing and food insecurity. It is through this work that she has developed exceptional advocacy skills and strong community partnerships which have been instrumental in strengthening community awareness for the hard to serve populations. After working over 20 years in human services for agencies on the Cape such as HAC, Independence House, Homeless Prevention Council and Dept. Of Transitional Assistance, Tara founded a nonprofit organization called Amplify POC (People of Color) Cape Cod. Amplify POC is a nonprofit racial justice organization with the mission to eliminate the racial wealth gap and foster ownership for communities of color on Cape Cod and beyond. Tara is also actively engaged in her local NAACP, MLK Jr. Action Team, and the Massachusetts Women of Color Coalition. She also proudly serves on the boards of Housing Assistance Corporation and CCYP. Tara currently lives in Hyannis with her family and 2 cats. She loves to laugh and spend quality time with friends and family taking trips and going on adventures. She is also an artist and loves to be creative in a multitude of ways in her free time.

Teresa Parker

Teresa Parker is the Publisher at the Provincetown Independent. She is currently working with a growing group of adventurous reporters, photographers, and artists to take back our newspaper and make it truly local, not “Wicked Local.” Teresa is dedicated to building a homegrown news business, one that will enliven our democracy and create local jobs. It’s not designed to make anybody rich, but it is designed to make our lives richer. The Independent's vision is to find stories that bring us closer to our neighbors and to this Outermost place. They strive to celebrate all that is good on the Outer Cape, in a place that’s proud of its tradition of welcoming separatists and strangers. Her reporting covers the four towns on the final stretch into the Atlantic: Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown—as well as the Cape Cod National Seashore.
