In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Dara Torres

Dara Torres, the most decorated US female Olympic athlete of all-time, NY Times best-selling author, fitness advocate, motivational speaker, entrepreneur, and mother, started her career on the international stage by breaking her first world record at the age of 15. This incredible feat was accomplished on the way to her first of 5 Olympic appearances, in Los Angeles at the 1984 Games. Torres who owns 4 Gold, 4 Silver and 4 Bronze medals was never someone that competed for the accolades instead for the challenge of doing what no one else has ever done. That intense passion for the unknown has driven Dara to represent the US from age 15 to age 41. This incredible journey, 26 years on the Olympic stage, has never been accomplished by any other American athlete and serves as the backdrop for Dara’s incredibly motivating speeches delivered to corporations all over the world. Mark Shapiro

Mark Shapiro, MD is the creator and host of Explore The Space Podcast, a show focused on bringing those who provide healthcare and those who seek healthcare closer together through conversations with leaders from across the spectrum. The show can be found at www.explorethespaceshow.com. Dr. Shapiro has been in clinical practice as a Hospitalist since 2006 and currently is a full-time Hospitalist at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with St. Joseph Health Medical Group in Santa Rosa, CA. He earned a BA in history at University of California-Los Angeles, attended medical school at Baylor College of Medicine and completed his Internal Medicine residency at University of California-San Diego. Dr. Shapiro is an active voice on Twitter. He is also an avid home coffee roaster and Peloton bike rider.

Patricia Numann

Patricia Joy Numann MD completed surgical training at the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse New York in 1970 when few women became surgeons. She joined the faculty at her alma mater where she remained her entire academic career, retiring in 2007 as the Lloyd S Rogers Professor of Surgery. Her alma mater honored her with the Distinguished Alumna award in 2000, the SUNY Distinguished Service Professor award in 2006, and an Honorary Doctor of Science degree in 2012. Although a general surgeon, Dr Numann built a specialized practice in breast and endocrine surgery. In 1986 she established the regions first Comprehensive Breast Care Center now named in her honor. Her dedication to women with breast cancer resulted in Carol M Baldwin establishing the Breast Cancer Research Foundation which since 2001 has donated more than 3 million dollars for Breast Cancer research. Her endocrine surgical expertise led to her election as Vice President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons in 1992. Dr Numann’s academic pursued an interest in surgical education when that was not considered an academic activity. As a founding member of the Association for Surgical Education she became President in 1985. She participated in numerous educational programs of the American College of Surgeons including SESAP. She created and directs the ACS Fundamentals of the Surgery Curriculum project. In 1994 she was named a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor. She has been a staunch supporter of gender equity. In 1981 her call for a meeting with other women surgeons resulted in the founding of the Association of Women Surgeons. Now nearly 40 years old, the organization has chapters and members throughout the world. The realization that gender equity is essential to assuring the world an adequate surgical workforce particularly in low and middle income countries has led to further support of women globally in particular, Women in Surgery Africa. Her activism on behalf of women began early and was recognized by her community naming her Post Standard Woman of the Year in 1978, being named Local Legend by the Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians project of the National Library of Medicine’s traveling exhibition, receiving the Elizabeth Blackwell Award from the American Medical Women’s Association and being elected President of the American College of Surgeons. Her outstanding contributions to gender equity, surgical education and breast and endocrine surgery resulted in her receiving the International Society of Surgeon’s Prize in 2011 and the American College of Surgeons Lifetime Achievement award in 2019. Dr Numann has served as mentor and sponsor of enumerable people throughout her surgical career. She has been the first woman in numerous positions most notably as a member of the American Medical Association’s Council on Scientific Affairs, chair of American Board of Surgery and President of the Association for Surgical Education. In recognition of Patricia Numann’s commitment to the education and training of surgeons worldwide, her dedication to the care of women with breast disease and her exemplary support for gender equity she has been made an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburg, the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand and the Association of Surgeons of India.

Rajnish Mago

Rajnish (“Raj”) Mago, MD is a clinical professor of psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY, and a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. He is also the founder of simpleandpractical.com, a website that provides helps advanced clinical tips for mental health clinicians and author of Side Effects of Psychiatric Medications: Assessment, Prevention, and Management, Second Edition (2020). Dr. Mago is equally a clinician, researcher, and educator, with each of these areas informing the others. Clinically, he has over 30 years of experience in psychiatry, and currently treats adults with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and ADHD. As a researcher and academic, he has done several studies on the assessment and treatment of side effects. As an educator, his website (simpleandpractical.com) helps thousands of mental health clinicians all over the world. He teaches psychiatry residents at SUNY Upstate and the University of Pennsylvania. He is chair of the education committees for the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Society and the Philadelphia Psychiatric Society. Dr. Mago has many awards for his exceptional teaching.

Robert Corona

Dr. Corona is the chief executive officer of Upstate Medical University Hospital and Community Hospital. He continues his academic role as John B Henry Endowed Professor of Experimental Pathology and Senior Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs. He is an emeritus member of the New York State Board for Medicine and past member of the NYS DOH Office of Professional Medical Conduct. Dr. Corona is board certified by the American Board of Pathology in neuropathology, clinical informatics and anatomic pathology. Dr. Corona has held many leadership positions throughout his career in academic medicine and industry. His most recent past roles include University Chief Innovation Officer, Department Chair of Pathology/Laboratory Medicine, elected Chair of the University Faculty Practice (UUMAS) and Vice President of Business Development. He held the position of Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical and Scientific Affairs at Welch Allyn, Inc. for 10 years and Medical Director for 6 years. Prior to joining Welch Allyn, he was Physician Director of Medical Informatics, Laboratory Informatics and Telemedicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University. While at Upstate, he founded CareNet, a medical informatics and telemedicine program that was nominated for the Smithsonian Award for Innovation in Medicine. He recently won CNY Business Journal 2020 Outstanding Hospital Executive. After graduating from Ithaca College in 1982, Dr. Corona received his medical degree from NYCOM/ NYIT (now known as NYITCOM) in Long Island, New York. He did a general medical internship at Southeastern Medical Center in Miami, Florida, and his pathology residency and neuropathology fellowship at SUNY Upstate Medical University. He did an additional neuropathology fellowship with concentration in muscle and nerve pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, DC.

Robert Swan

Robert Swan, MD was raised in Upstate New York. He went to medical school at SUNY Upstate Medical University where he met his wife Becca with whom he has three amazing children. They both did internship at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY and residency at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY. After spending two years as a general ophthalmologist at Bassett Medical Center they moved to Boston for fellowship training. Dr. Swan finished fellowship in Ocular Immunology at MERSI in 2015 and from there he and Becca returned to SUNY Upstate. Currently he is the only ophthalmologist specializing in ocular inflammation in the Central New York region. He serves as the Ophthalmology Department Quality officer, EPIC Champion, and director of the Ophthalmology Residency program. In 2018 he was awarded both Downtown Provider of the Year and Program Director of the Year. He is on several national committees through the American Academy of Ophthalmology including Committee on Resident Education, Academic Global Ophthalmology and Surgical Curriculum. In 2020 he was selected by the AUPO (a national association of ophthalmology department leadership) to present at the annual meeting on the topic of remediating professionalism. In addition to his many collaborations and projects with other Departments, he's currently exploring ways to improve the EHR having recently finished EPIC Physician Builder training.
