Theme: Reshaping the Narrative - Kubadili Simulizi

TEDxMajengo aims to showcase different stories, spark curiosity, open minds, and bring together unexpected connections leading to new community-centric initiatives, collaborations, or movements in Arusha. The event will generate networking, interactioning and linking between 100 attendees from a range of backgrounds and professions. Of these attendees, 25 fully subsidized tickets will be made available for a selected group of 18-30 year olds (with specific focus and priority on those under 25).

The talks will be based around the theme “Reshaping the Narrative”. This theme encompasses the idea of changing the story, from individual perceptions up to national identity. It draws heavily from the acclaimed talk by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie on “The Danger of a Single Story” and sets out to confound some of the common stereotypes about Africa. The theme also builds from that of 2018 (“Origins and Changes”) in that it will ask the audience to redefine what the future could look like for themselves and their communities. The goal of TEDxMajengo 2019 is to share different stories and experiences of life in the community and to spark an interest in those ideas of change.

Dr. Daniel Pallangyo

Environmental Lawyer

Dr. Daniel Mirisho Pallangyo, Esq is a fulltime senior Lecturer of Law at Tumaini University Makumira and the Dean of the Faculty of Law. He holds a doctorate in Law from North West University, South Africa (2013); Master of Laws in Environmental Law from University of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa (2005) and LL.B (Hons) from Tumaini University, Iringa University College (2004). Dr. Pallangyo is a member and deputy regional director (Africa) of Global Network for Human Rights and the Environment (GNHRE) and a member of World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL). He is an Advocate of the High Court of Tanzania, Commissioner for Oaths and Notary Public. Dr. Pallangyo has published numerously (books, book chapters and journal articles) in areas of African regional integration law, environmental law and criminal law.

Dr. Frank Artress

Doctor and medical teacher

Frank L. Artress MD, is the Co-Founder/Co-Director of the Foundation for African Medicine and Education (FAME) - a hospital and medical campus in northern Tanzania that provides quality, Patient-Centered Care for under-resourced communities. Prior to coming to Tanzania, Dr. Frank spent more than 20 years doing Cardiac Anesthesia, the last 18 years at a hospital in Central California where they did an average of 600 Open Heart Surgeries per year. As a member of a cardiac team with the Medical Relief Foundation, he helped to set up heart surgery programs in Guatemala, Nicaragua and Vladivostok, Russia. In 2002, Dr. Frank and his wife Susan Gustafson moved to Tanzania, where they operated a mobile clinic for several years while establishing FAME, a hospital with a strong focus on Reproductive and Child Health, 24/7 Emergency Care, and a rigorous Continuing Medical Education program. With nearly 30,000 patient visits annually, FAME serves a catchment area of 1.2 million rural Tanzanians.

Elie Chansa

Visual storyteller

Elie is a visual storyteller, community mobiliser and cyber security consultant with a base in Arusha and multiple projects across Tanzania. His journalism skills have allowed him to reshape the narratives for small and medium enterprises, and for local communities through his brand, InHouse Pictures.

Erick Kondela

AI and android developer

Erick is working as the Senior Artificial Intelligence and Android Developer for Shule Direct, an award-winning e-learning social enterprise that leverages existing technology to improve access to qualified, relevant and digital learning resources to over 1,500,000 young learners across East Africa. Here he can apply his expertise and experience in computer programming to develop mobile applications and learning solutions. Being featured on CGTN Africa to demonstrate Ticha Kidevu, an innovative artificial intelligence chatbot to enhance the learning and teaching experiences, Erick strongly believes in the power of technology to transform lives. He is the founder of the Global Youth Tech Talk (GYTT), a platform that connects youth to discuss emerging technological developments from around the globe. By raising awareness in this area, sustainable solutions to community problems can be reached.

Estahappy Mariki Wenje

SRH Coach and Educator

Working to resolve adolescent challenges and spreading knowledge on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) to youth, Estahappy is a counsellor, mentor, coach, social worker and gender activist. She holds a diploma in medicine and a bachelor degree in Social work followed by Master of gender studies. She went to local Government schools where students didn’t have opportunity for SRH education and life skills learning, therefore she decided to focus on assisting other young people to get what she missed by being a youth advocate in schools and outside of school. Estahappy, the Executive director of the Girl’s Foundation of Tanzania has more than 15 years’ experience working with youth as peer educator, volunteer and coach. At the Girl’s Foundation of Tanzania, she designed the Youth SRH/life Advocate program. The program trains strong and courageous youth advocates in schools in Arusha and Manyara region to reach other students by opening up discussions of the non-spoken topics of SRH.

Mary Ng'wananogu

Educator

Mary is a mother, educationist and passionate advocate for the rights of children and young people. She is CEO of Macooba Center, an institution that provides academic and non-curricular activities for children in Tanzania. With a Diploma in Child Care, Child Psychology and Development from Ashworth University in the United States, she has more than 20 years of experience teaching and working with children across the world. She is passionate about discovering and nurturing children’s talents from an early age and has a goal of discovering the hidden treasure in each and every young person.

Rania Nahdi

Artist

Rania Amer Nahdi is a champion of artistic talent and expression for women in Tanzania. She is an artist, she has always been an artist, however, for almost two decades, she was a daughter, wife and mother instead. Rania is now a successful artist who uses a mixed media approach of paint and vibrant African Kitenge fabric in her work to express her emotional journey through oppression, self-realisation, emancipation and beyond. She works in the Arusha region to support aspiring female artists to break free of cultural, religious and marital stereotypes to embrace their talents as a way of achieving happiness and self-fulfilment. Rania is also currently developing projects to establish Art Therapy programs to shine the light of creative expression on children and young adults in East Africa.

Sudi Muli

Occupational therapist

Sudi Muli is a therapist, activist and innovator working to improve the lives of children across a range of different abilities. He is an independent pediatric occupational therapist based in Arusha working with organisations and institutions to cater to the well-being and rights of children. With 10 years of experience working as a therapist, he most values true day to day interactions with loving and amazing children with different abilities, dreams, and talents.
