Goblin Party
Choreographer
The Goblin party has been asking all the audiences a question. And one of their own work named 'Once upon a time' starts from the very beginning ideas. “Why do we have to use all the props just as decorations for human?” In that performance some Korean traditional props- gat(Korean traditional hat made of bamboo), top knot, durumagi(Korean traditional overcoat), hanbok(Korean traditional clothes)-are not decoration but the key characters who mainly lead the performance. One sleepless night, gat on the head of the dancer tells an old story. It makes the audience escape prejudice or fixed ideas that we had been building up unconsciously about tradition. The tradition reinterpreted by mischievous and funny Goblin is full of life and contains humor and satirizes on that era. Like this, the Goblin party re-constitutes and re-interprets the Korean tradition so makes audience reconsider the way of continuing tradition.
Grady (Kyung Soo) Moon
Science Explorer
When we watch movie 'Indiana Jones', we soon be attracted in the adventures of Indiana Jones and dream those adventures together. However, after the movie, we forget the passion we felt because we expect adventures are dangerous, so we, the average people, cannot explore like Indiana Jones. In the past centuries, many significant discoveries such as Darwin’s theory of evolution and Columbus’ American continent discovery were based on expeditions. However, in nowadays, expedition is no more in our life.
Do we really not need adventure? The science explorer Grady Moon answers “No”. He says adventure is one of the methods that we can resolve curiosity. Many of us are unfamiliar with the word, “Adventure”. However, as human race always has craved the world outside, Grady Moon says everyone has adventure DNA inside. Through the exploration experiences with NASA astrobiologists, he will suggest a new perspective about why human needs adventure.
Jiseob Lee
Founder of 'Awesome-school'
The speaker starts his talk by introducing motive that made him launch a startup named “Awesome-school”. He has liked a word, “Renovation starts in the periphery.”. At first, he did not understand what those words mean. Afterwards, he finally understood it. It means that no one interferes with the peripheral people or things. The peripheral subjects have much freedom to develop their ideas. Then, some of those great ideas finally make the change. This is the process of renovation. So he decided to make the periphery in school. In Korea, most teachers coerce students to ‘study’. So the students who study well are the good and the others are the bad and become the peripheries. Therefore he arranges a space for the peripheries to develop their ideas. For about 4 years and for about 150 schools that Awesome School are held, radical changes are taking place. His talk introduces those changes and gives people the hope that educational problem can be renovated.
Jong Suk Kim
Producer at KBS
Historical content on TV before 2013 was for the most part, documentaries. But documentaries faded in popularity due to the one-sided portrayal of historical events that should, in theory, have more than one interpretations. For these reasons, KBS halted production on documentaries in 2013. A new mode of historical content borne from this void was history talk shows. The emergence of history talk shows solved several previously existing problems. First, unlike previous documentaries that imposed biased and often singular interpretations, history talk shows gave audiences the freedom to interpret the history. Secondly, these talk shows could provoke thought and present balanced conflict through the careful mix of seasoned experts and ordinary citizens. Finally, steering away from documentaries, which born of propagandic nature, and paving way for discussions to be the new mode for historical content allowed history to be captured not as a nation’s story but that of man kind’s.
Kwangsik Kim
Professor of Liberal Education at Seoul National University
"Who am I?" There is no question that we can answer easily, but ambiguously more than this question. In 2017, we live in the world where such beings like robots that was clearly defined not as human come into our daily life and replace our role in various fields. In particular, the role of artificial intelligence is prominent in the workplace. Now we are getting out of work that is regarded as hard and suffering thing. Should we just welcome this situation? Maybe not, because labor can be viewed as a tool for the realization of a person's ego, beyond the means of livelihood. From this perspective, we won't be able to think this situation only positively. Now, how can we define ourselves as human being? Furthermore, what do we need to keep our lives for human being? Professor Kim finds the answer in labor. Let's go back to the first question. "Who am I?" This is a question that must be asked at this moment when all the social systems are getting out of the existing systems.
Soon Chil Lee
Professor at KAIST
The TED Talk is about quantum computer. The professor divides the talk into three main parts: Dark Ages of quantum computer, Renaissance of quantum computer, and how quantum computers are like nowadays. Before talking about quantum computer, he explains how quantum physics has influenced our lives. The development of quantum physics helped develop chemistry, physics, and biology. Also he explains about two main keywords in quantum physics: superposition and quantum entanglement. Superposition means that two states exist at the same time. Quantum entanglement is that two objects are in superposition, so people can now the status of both objects just by looking at one.
