Theme: Aberration

This event occurred on
March 15, 2019
Tucson, Arizona
United States

This year's theme is "Aberration", defined as a departure from what is normal, usual, or expected, typically one that is unwelcome. Our talks will challenge your expectations and preconceptions of science, law, philosophy, and more.

"Aberration" is also a term used in photography used to describe the separation of colors in an image, which we have replicated throughout the experience of our event.

Albertina Antognini

At a moment when the number of people living in non-marital relationships is at an all-time high, Professor Antognini's talk questions the continued vitality of marriage. It reveals that courts regulate non-marital relationships by relying on legal rules that once regulated marriage – rules that are so traditional and archaic that they have actually been discarded in marriage proper. The talk identifies the persistence of marital norms in non-marital spaces, and identifies the ways in which family relationships are defined by law in order to productively question the “natural order of things.”
