Hiroshi Hatano

Photographer / Former Hunter

Born in Tokyo in 1983. Mr. Hatano, a photographer and previously hunter, has quietly watched wildlife for years. He developed multiple myeloma, a hematologic cancer in 2017. He publicly announced his cancer and continues to convey his frank thoughts on the matter of life and death, now as an affiliated individual. His cancer, families he has to leave, death and lives... His words stir our feelings and evoke our reaction.

Juno Ohtani

Chief Priest at Hattasan Sonei-ji Temple

Born in Fukuroi City, Shizuoka Prefecture, in 1968. After completing his master's degree at a Buddhist University and training at Koyasan, known as the headquarters of the Koyasan sect of Shingon Buddhism, Mr. Ohtani joined Hattasan Sonei-ji Temple. He has served as chief priest there since 2009. To bridge the gap in being away from home for 8 years, he began participating in local community activities such as at the City Junior Chamber, Tourism Association and voluntary firefighters. These activities have had a great influence on not only how he manages the temple, but also how the temple now serves as a "place in the community." Talking with his friends and getting excited about developing the temple and community is now his greatest passion.

Kentaro Onishi

Dancer / Performance Artist

Mr. Onishi is a performer who continually seeks "dance" by means of encountering the charms of different places, people and customs. After graduating from the Graduate School of Tokyo University of the Arts, he took up dancing and performing based on the theme of "wind." Since 2011, he has served as instructor and general director of his self-launched project, "Guru Guru Mix," a creative classroom for children. He has also worked on the "O" Dance Project at Komone Fukushien (welfare facility) in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo since 2015. In 2018, he cooperated with locals in the Republic of Ecuador to produce and perform "El Azabiro de La Tola."

Mai Wakuda

Randoseru Planner

Born in 1979 in Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture, lives in Hamamatsu City. Ms. Wakuda worked for a miscellaneous goods company up until she had her first child. Seeing her daughter go to elementary school carrying "randoseru," a heavy Japanese school backpack, she started to wonder why all the students must use them. She established Kotoyuku-sha, an LLC, with her former colleague who felt the same. They produce reasonably priced randoseru for regular use with not only good design but also high practicality. She warns that traditional heavy randoseru put strain on children's bodies and affect their growth. *Randoseru: Japanese school backpack for elementary school students

Makoto Miyachi

Market Innovator

Born in 1974 in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. After spending 21 years as an auctioneer in the fresh produce market, Mr. Miyachi realized that the market was shrinking and production declining due to a reduction of the agricultural workforce. Suspecting an incoming crisis in the industry, he began a business to build up a marketing system "from production to dispatch." Using his extensive experience in the industry, he has established a system that enables anybody to grow and sell produce with high added value like a ripened professional. Hoping to solve the problem at its roots, he created "profitable agriculture" with his own original smart-agriculture. The advanced technology incorporated has gathered attention not only from large corporations but also from the Japanese government and parties overseas.

Miyoko Katsuno

Designer

Ms. Katsuno was born in 1995 in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. She has loved handcrafting since she was young. She grew up in an environment which fostered her craftsmanship and her mother always said, "You want to do something – do it. You don't want to – don't do it." In her last year of high school, she fell in love with the world of design where one may develop logical thinking. She joined the Shizuoka University of Art and Culture where she encountered various aspects of design and numerous other fields of study. After graduating, she opened Shuzenji Tsubame-sha, a gift shop & design studio business, which originates from a project she was involved in during her time at university. Her goal is to create activities with roots in the local community and she has been working to make a more lively community.

ShizuokaSeikoGakuin Rugby Team

High School Student

Founded in 1974. This rugby team practices three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for 1 to 1.5 hours a day. On other weekdays, they study or work on other school activities and during weekends and holidays, go on study and training camps together. This is all in the pursuit of achieving "Bunbu-Ryodo" - to excel in both literacy and physical arts. The motto of the team is Succeed – "Give everything your all and succeed." As a result of a training style focused on quality over quantity, they have been successful in competing at the national high school rugby tournament at Hanazono Rugby Stadium several times. Even the Commissioner of the Japan Sports Agency has visited them to observe their training as a 'leading example of the application of ingenious training styles.'
