In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Alison Riddoch

Alison Riddoch is a grade 12 French Immersion student in Coquitlam, BC . She is a competitive swimmer and will be heading to Ottawa for university next year. In 2017 she was an Ambassador for French for the Future, co-hosted the 2018 Vancouver and Victoria Local Forums run by French for the Future, and is a SHAD fellow.

Asalah Youssef

Asalah Youssef is a 16 year old activist, public speaker and photographer. She is passionate about advocating for youth involvement in activism and social entrepreneurship which lead her to speak on the We Day tour across Canada. Asalah is currently building her own social enterprise which aims to make goods, services and experiences accessible to low income Canadians. She believes making a difference in the world is something everyone can do, no matter your age. She has starred in an RBC and WE Day commercial, been written about and interviewed by The National Post, The Globe & Mail, CTV, Breakfast Television and MTV. She has a passion for photography and uses it to spark questions and create change. When she is not busy promoting social entrepreneurship, public speaking, photographing and advocating for animal rights, Asalah enjoys hiking and being outside. Her aim is to show people, especially youth, the power in their voice and how it can be used to create change.

Duncan Ryans

Duncan is a grade 12 student at Langley Fine Arts School, in Fort Langley BC. He has had the privilege of working with community members and indigenous leaders as a student ambassador for the Moose Hide Campaign. Duncan spoke at the Campaign’s conference in Victoria and spent the day learning more about indigenous culture. It has introduced him to his passion, linguistics and language reclamation. Developing an appreciation for indigenous culture has inspired Duncan to pursue truth and reconciliation. Next year, Duncan hopes to stay allied with the campaign, spreading the initiative through the community at SFU. Duncan would like to thank his mother, Jayden, as well as Josette Dandurand for walking besides him in life, showing him patience, compassion and never ending love.

Katelyn Precious

Katelyn Precious is 13 years old and currently attends Brookswood Secondary in Langley, BC. She is a dedicated and driven French immersion student that is very involved in her extracurricular activities as well as her volunteer work. Katelyn is always looking forward to what the future holds and is excited to share her outlook with everyone.

Kaxie Alejo

At the age of 8, Kaxie Alejo arrived at Canada unwillingly, frustrated by the thought of leaving her mother country behind. When she first arrived, her family took a deep dive into learning about Canadian culture. But, as she spent time in the school system she felt more embarrassed about her own culture and it became difficult to freely express herself. As she got older she began to accept the reality of adapting. With the encouragements of her peers, opportunities provided by her community and the requirements of the education system, she began to grow not just as a person but as a leader. It also allowed her to tackle the adversities she had encountered as an immigrant. She now takes the advantage of helping her community through hosting school events and participating in volunteering opportunities around the community.
