Theme: TEDx HKBU: Think. Think? Think!

Thinking is something we do everyday - we think about what to eat, what to wear and many other details and questions. However, what is “thinking”, on the conscious and unconscious level, and are we actually thinking enough?

Our thinking starts with an idea. The idea can be formed from a small inspiration of our own, or with influence from the news or our social connections. We may then question the idea with a question mark in mind, taking the initiative to challenge existing thoughts, pondering on the feasibility of that minor spark in our mind, and eventually we may end up at the last stage in our theme, to “think!” with determination about putting an idea into action that makes a difference.

J Lou

Social Media Personality

With an Eurasian background and five languages under her belt, J Lou has become one of the frequent faces on Instagram Explore. J Lou’s videos, often multilingual, became viral in her last year of university, and have garnered millions of views across her social media platforms since. From then, J Lou got into the creative world full time, despite traditional expectations from her Chinese side.

Jason Lai

TV Presenter, Conductor, Life Coach

Jason Lai is the Principal Conductor at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra and has been a prominent figure in Singapore’s musical life since his arrival in 2010, he is the former Associate Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Hong Kong Sinfonietta. He is also building a unique reputation as a communicator with mass appeal through his television appearances in both the UK and Asia most recently with Heart of Asia series and Tales From Modern China for BBC World. Jason’s roots lie in Hong Kong but he was born in the UK, having studied at Chatham’s School of Music and Oxford University his conducting career was launched after winning BBC’s Young Conductor Workshop in 2001.

Puja Kapai

Associate Professor & Convenor of the Women’s Studies Research Centre, University of Hong Kong

Puja Kapai is an Associate Professor and Convenor of the Women’s Studies Research Centre at the Faculty of Law of the University of Hong Kong. Her expertise lies in human rights law, especially equality and minority rights. Professor Kapai’s teaching, research and social justice advocacy focuses on the rights of marginalised communities in relation to gender, race, religion, sexuality, citizenship, using an intersectional framework. Her research reports have been presented to the Chief Executive of the HKSAR Administration, Mrs. Carrie Lam and Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung, Hong Kong’s Legislative Council and United Nations. Several recommendations made in her reports have been implemented. Professor Kapai received the International Women of Courage Hong Kong Award 2015 from the US Consul General, HKU Faculty of Law’s Outstanding Teaching Award 2016 and Knowledge Exchange Award 2017 in recognition of her contribution to teaching and the impact of her work in the community.

Woody Chan

Born in Hong Kong, Woody Chan graduated from the University of Cambridge with a degree in Geography. Since then he has worked as a research analyst at CWR, a non-profit think tank aiming to embed water & climate risks in business & finance. Zaneta Cheng

Currently the Fashion and Features Editor for Prestige Hong Kong. Zaneta also writes for titles including Women’s Wear Daily and Magazine B as a freelance contributor. As a journalist, Zaneta covers fashion, culture, travel, beauty, jewellery and lifestyle. Born to media personality Lawrence Cheng Tan Shui, Zaneta’s interest in fashion and its role in shaping perception at a young age when the family would look through and choose her father’s show outfits. Zaneta studied English literature and Political Science at University of Pennsylvania. She then pursued a master’s degree in Shakespeare at UCL in London. There she realised that dissertations were a source of much existential angst and segued quietly out of psychological theory and into costumes. On the side, however, Zaneta uses her personal public profile to draw awareness to causes such as Sheer’s bra drive and speaking at panels on topics ranging from overseas study to Shakespeare.
