The theme of this event is "Ask." We will explore how asking questions is more effective than thinking that one must already have all of the answers in achieving personal, community, academic, and professional goals.

At TEDxYouth@CedarRidge, we will hear from several engaging speakers with ideas that will be exciting for students, teachers, and community members. Half way through the program, we will take a break for conversation, photo opportunities, and a light lunch.

Austin Wesevich

Duke Resident Physician + Global Health Advocate

Beginning his journey in the developing world on a two-week trip to Honduras with other Catholic undergraduate students, Austin Wesevich has explored various countries and cultures as a rising global health physician. After two months working with a non-governmental organization that trains community health workers in rural Uganda, he was granted a Benjamin H. Kean Travel Fellowship in Tropical Medicine to spend a month analyzing data on health promotion through church-based interventions in Zambia as well as a Doris Duke International Clinical Research Fellowship to spend nine months researching male partner dynamics and infant development for pregnant and breastfeeding women with HIV in Malawi. Austin rounded out his medical school experience by learning about healthcare delivery through four weeks in India. He is now a resident in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Duke University applying the lessons he has learned abroad to patient care in Durham.

Isa Van der Drift

Cedar Ridge Alumna + Undergraduate Student at UNC Chapel Hill

Isa van der Drift is a proud alumna of Cedar Ridge High School and is in her third year of undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a double major in Peace, War and Defense and Arab Cultures, and is also a Morehead-Cain scholar. Through the Morehead-Cain she interned in a collaborative group focused on food insecurity in Louisville, Kentucky. She was also a gender policy and strategy research assistant at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. Isa’s primary research interests include women, peace and security as well as environmental scarcity and both of these concepts’ intersections with conflict resolution and demilitarization, rehabilitation and reintegration processes. She is also involved in the UNC-CH Honor Court as well as other organizations on campus dedicated to international relations and her fields of study.

Shree Bose

Duke MD/PhD Student + 2011 Google Global Science Fair Winner + STEM education advocate

As a student with an early passion for biology and medicine, Shree Bose was honored as the Grand Prize winner of the first ever Google Global Science Fair in 2011 for her work with drug resistance in ovarian cancer. Competing against 10,000 students from 91 countries who submitted their projects online, she was judged by a panel of scientific luminaries, earning a $50,000 Google scholarship, a trip to the Galapagos Islands with National Geographic Expeditions, and a trip to CERN. After receiving an incredible platform to speak around the world, she has become a dedicated STEM education advocate, working with various organizations to further K-12 STEM education including cofounding her own startup, Piper, to create engineering kits for kids. As a current MD/PhD student at Duke, Shree hopes to pursue a career at the intersection of medicine and research.
