You are cordially invited to the next TEDxTheHague salon! Our November edition — themed Mind Is Blown — is curated by TEDxTheHague:
"Everything you see is delayed and upside down. Yet your brain does an incredible job at adapting to this. It processes widely varied information faster than the blink of an eye, stores complex experiences, and adapts to changes within and outside our body. Tonight, let's celebrate some astonishing feats of the mind."
We'll explore this theme by watching and discussing the following videos:
BostonDynamics: UpTown Spot
Boston Dynamics continues to crank out viral-worthy videos of its robots busting strange and unexpected moves. In this new video, its dog-like SpotMini robot dances to a cover of Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk."
Arthur Benjamin: Faster than a calculator
Benjamin makes numbers dance. In his day job, he's a professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd College; in his other day job, he's a "Mathemagician," taking the stage to perform high-speed mental calculations, memorizations and other astounding mathematic stunts.
Kate Darling: Why we have an emotional connection to robots
We're far from developing robots that feel emotions, but we already have feelings towards them, says robot ethicist Kate Darling, and an instinct like that can have consequences. Learn more about how we're biologically hardwired to project intent and life onto machines — and how it might help us better understand ourselves.
Christoph Niemann: You are fluent in this language (and don't even know it)
Without realizing it, we're fluent in the language of pictures, says illustrator Christoph Niemann. In a charming talk packed with witty, whimsical drawings, Niemann takes us on a hilarious visual tour that shows how artists tap into our emotions and minds — all without words.
RSVP if you want to attend
We hope this theme will resonate with you, awaken your curiosity and make you decide to attend TEDxTheHague. To stimulate conversation, we admit up to 25 guests. If you want to be put on our final guest list, please RSVP. First-come, first-served!
We look forward to a stimulating evening filled with spirited conversation and new discoveries.
