Theme: Questioning Assumptions

This year, we will address assumptions. One definition for assumption: a thing that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof. The talks at TEDxHastingsSt this year will address the necessity and dangers of assumptions as well as strategies for putting our assumptions to the test and accepting the results.

Darth Cornelius

Darth Cornelius is a Writer, youtuber and community worker who specializes in indigenous culture, human ecology and socioeconomics. While working with Whaia Te Tika, he used ancestral stories and the knowledge of traditional incantations, to empower young men to take leadership of their own lives. His talk will help us question the assumptions we often make about the power of an individual to affect change at a global scale.

Kahurangi Maori Dance Company

The Kahurangi Māori Dance Theatre was at the forefront of the renaissance of Māori Performing Arts. Formed in the early 1980’s by Tama Huata and a team who shared his vision to present Māori performing arts in a dynamic and contemporary manner, our touring teams have travelled the world promoting cultural understanding, and inviting audiences to participate in their programmes.

Lani Morris

Lani has over thirty years' experience as an independent organisational behaviour practitioner in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom, and as a contract lecturer at universities and tertiary institutions. She has studied the human search for meaning all her life, through philosophy and comparative religion in her undergraduate degree and through independent study. The key focus of her work is to help people take responsibility for and reclaim power over themselves, their lives and their work. Her expertise includes: leadership, motivation, clear communication, innovation, creativity, meaningful work, and how these subjects intertwine. Since 2000 she has used the Map of Meaning to enrich and develop her areas of expertise in a wide range of social and organisational contexts. Lani is a Co-founder and CEO of the Map of Meaning International Trust, and co-author of The Map of Meaningful Work: A Practical Guide to Sustaining our Humanity.

Linda Trubridge

Linda was born in Bermuda and educated in Britain. After her marriage to David and the birth of their sons they decided to abandon their secure future for a voyage that eventually led the family to New Zealand. There she developed her art and yoga practices and career while David established his internationally renowned design business; sons Sam and William lead the world in performance design and freediving. All of these accomplishments Linda attributes to that inspirational time, when her family lived in harmony with the ocean.

Russell Booth

My role predominantly is teaching Leadership and Management classes in the School of Business. I have over 25 years working in the Careers Industry mostly in New Zealand but also the UK. I have developed and implemented computer-aided guidance programs, career education programs and for the last 13 years run a highly successful and well-regarded career company. Helping numerous people from school age through to those nearing the end of working life to find work they enjoy and find purposeful. Main research areas are around meaningful work, how individuals find it and why it is meaningful to them. I am also interested in the neuroscience of the young adult /adolescent brain and how this impacts on young people making effective career decisions. I have been awarded the title of Fellow to the Career Development Association of New Zealand for my contributions to the Careers Industry both nationally and internationally. I am also immediate past-Chair of Napier City Rovers which I did for 7 years and was a Board member for many more years which has given me a very sound understanding of managing/running a high-performing, sports organisation run by volunteers.
