Theme: Re-imagining our future

This event occurred on
November 10, 2018
Cape Town, Western Cape
South Africa

We live in a unique time in history. Slowly and fiercely the status quo is being questioned and life is being breathed into new ways of thinking and being. In our lifetime we have been witness to movements like Luister, Fees Must Fall and the plight for land expropriation aimed at disrupting the very fibres of what was deemed the norm. Reimagining education, the power of language and home.

The rapid evolution of technology and how it has embedded itself into every aspect of our daily lives makes it a pivotal element when thinking through future possibilities. We have found ourselves in an age of augmented reality and artificial intelligence. In light of all of this, it is fundamental to ask those who will be left to carry the baton, and live through the ramifications, what it means to reimagine the future. What is the lived reality and what is the hope.

This event intends to tap into inspiring minds to hear how they see our future.

Emer Butler

She is an introvert at heart, invigorated by being awake at 4:00 am in order to have the morning silence and fresh air all to herself. No stranger to the stage she has partaken in Model United Nations and WIMUN and now the TEDxYouth2018 stage. Moved by her passion to fight for human rights, she started blogging for UNICEF's Voices of Youth at 14. It is no surprise that she has decided to share her thoughts on Building Equality with us.

Josh Ramsey

Coach and Facilitator
Josh Ramsey is a playful and passionate trainer who believes our personal power comes in the form of small everyday decisions. As a behaviour change coach and organisational development facilitator he sees time and again how grand sweeping gestures of change do not hold the same power as small and often invisible decisions to effect change. In this talk he transparently shares his experience of healing his relationship with pornography as well as the logic which led to and impact which followed this healing. He poses questions which invite the viewer to consider the small choices they make on a daily basis regarding their consumption of Hyper-stimulating Digital Media, and how those choices may be affecting their sense of personal power.

Kai Parsons

Entrepreneur
A bonafide entrepreneur deeply inspired by the idea that anyone can change the world if they try hard enough. His talk is aptly named, 'Entrepreneurship Needs to Be Taught In Schools'.

Shirene Bezudenhoudt

Young Storyteller
This multifaceted young lady can be found lost in putting her thoughts to paper or playing a township variation of pool that replaces the pool cue and balls with a stick and some stones. In 2017, she was part of the SAVE Foundation’s TED-Ed Club which is where she discovered and honed her passion for writing. When she heard about the opportunity to speak at the TEDxYouthCapeTown 2018 event she just could not resist. This bright young mind shares her thoughts on the importance of taking care of the future as it is, after all, ours.

Tiisetso Mashifane wa Noni

She uses the stage masterfully. Easily captures her audience with her intimacy and knowledge of the arts. Meet Tiisetso Mashifane wa Noni, our resident smooth and mysterious black panther. This brilliant young mind is passionate about relentless, fearless and limitless storytelling and intends to showcase that on 10 November. She was drawn to the TEDxYouth stage because she wants to highlight the importance of starting conversations that speak to the social complexities of the silenced voices in the new South Africa.
