Theme: Showing Up

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Abigail Urey-Miller

Yogi

Abigail Urey-Miller is a believer in the exponential power of the Liberian private sector. At present, she is the Tax & Accounting Partner at Phoenix Taxation and Accounting Consultancy (Monrovia) and Co-Owner and CEO of EdGail Recycling Inc. (Monrovia). As the Co-Owner and CEO of EdGail, a scrap metal company turned recycling firm, Abigail is also noted as being one of the most noteworthy female industrial exporters in Liberia, focusing on transforming and adding value to waste materials. Abigail is an avid yogi and leads yoga practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Monrovia Health and Wellness Centre. She is a Board Member of the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa, where she enjoys contributing to the development and mentorship of young people.

Eva Flomo

Journalist

As a champion of women rights, journalist and media specialist, Eva Flomo has been providing a platform for Liberian voices for over 20 years. Eva’s passion for the protection of journalists is aligned with her vision to transform the media landscape of Liberia by empowering women to assume leadership roles and narrowing the leadership gap in the sector. She has been the recipient of Journalist of the Year Award (Press Union of Liberia 2011-2012), LBS-USA Individual Journalist Award (2011), Woman Leader of the year (Action-Aid International, 2010) and Hubert H. Humphrey Fulbright Fellow (University of Maryland, USA 2013/2014). Currently, Eva is the Coordinator of ECOWAS Radio, and is widely known for her insightful programs that are centered on peace, unity, reconciliation, and national and regional integration.

Hawa Jande Golakai

Author

Hawa Jande Golakai wears many hats with grace and aplomb - Liberian woman, mother, author, activist and medical scientist just to name a few! Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Hawa spent a vibrant childhood growing up in Liberia, and with the onset of the civil war began what she describes as a cultural nomad's journey. Her debut novel, The Lazarus Effect (2011), and other works have been featured in publications such as Granta, The Guardian UK, Commonwealth Anthology, and Omenana Magazine. Hawa is a laureate of the African39 Project which celebrates the most promising authors on the African continent. Hawa herself is the winner of the 2017 Brittle Paper award for her creative non-fiction Fugee, her personal account of the Ebola crisis. Always looking to immerse herself in new cultures and opportunities, Hawa lives in Monrovia with her son. She will be publishing The Score, the sequel to her debut novel, in 2019 and is currently working on her third novel, set in a futuristic Liberia.

Lorpu Faith Scott

Activist

A passionate educator by profession, Lorpu Faith Scott is a capacity builder, teacher, teacher trainer, advocate, education administrator and policy development specialist. Over the years, she has used her various positions to provide solutions impacting the reform of education issues at various levels within the educational system, including for out of school children and youth. Lorpu was elected twice as President for the National Teachers Association of Liberia (NTAL) in Fuamah District, Bong County, Liberia Never one to shy away from challenges, Lorpu made her directorial debut with the Liberian film, Stolen Childhood, which tells the story of a colleague who was abused by a family member at the age of eight. By combining her advocacy skills, with film, Lorpu continues to advocate for the rights of women and children while raising awareness on issues related to sexual abuse and finding solutions to the on-going challenges.

Prince Toe

Prince Toe is in the 5th grade at Monrovia Football Academy. The Academy is the first school in Liberia to combine high-quality academic classes with professional sport training. In 2017, the BBC called Monrovia Football Academy the first sport academy in Africa to be founded on 50:50 gender equity. It is a member of the LEAD Africa network of academies.

Satta Sheriff

Child Rights Advocate

One of Liberia’s youngest and most dynamic youth and female advocates, Satta Sheriff was elected first female Speaker of the Liberian Children’s Parliament when she was just 16 years old. In the same year she went on to co-founded the Joint Action Committee in Children (JACC) a national forceful and proactive advocacy group demanding concrete actions and steps to restore social justice for all children, and was awarded the Most Influential Teen Award in Liberia. A child rights advocate, Satta is a One Young World Peace Ambassador, a Brand Ambassador of Change - Youth for Change, National Debate Champion in Liberia and a Diana Princess of Wales Active Campaigner. As Founder of Youth in Action for Peace and Empowerment (YAPE), a children and youth driven NGO founded to advocate, empower girls and other vulnerable groups in society, Satta is a member of the Global Leadership Council, and was recognized as one of the fifty most impacting young females Leaders in Africa in 2017.
