Theme: The Power of Know

The seventh anniversary of TEDx Hickory is coming to The Belk Centrum at Lenoir-Rhyne University on November 3rd. This independently organized event, licensed by TED, will feature a combination of live speakers and TED Talk videos that is sure to elevate the thinking and broaden the perspective of all who participate. This year’s theme is The Power of Know.

We have all the knowledge in the world right at our fingertips. Don't believe me? Pull out your phone. Nowadays, we can look up information on just about anything - So what does being knowledgeable mean?

From birth we seek to learn, to understand, to know. All of us know some things but none of us know all things - Isn't it time to go back to basics? To explore, to discover, and to be amazed by new things? To learn from true experts? At TEDx Hickory 2018, you'll find out through "The Power of Know."

Alan Jackson

Alan is the founder and current Strategic Director of Jackson Creative, a custom video and marketing media production firm helping organizations tell their stories through video, online media and podcasts. After having spent over twenty years in healthcare survey consulting with the family business The Jackson Group he now serves as the Director of Jackson Insight, a survey research and consulting firm specializing in customer experience, market perception, and employee engagement surveys. Alan is also the co-founder of the Footcandle Film Society, a membership-driven non-profit organization that hosts film screenings, discussions, and educational events throughout the year. The film society was started in 2007 and currently has over 600 members. The film society also started the Footcandle Film Festival in 2015, an annual weekend-long event that bring a variety of films and their filmmakers to the Catawba County area. Alan is married to Suzanne and has three boys ranging in age from 12 to 24.

Bill Morgan

Bill Morgan is known to local theatre audiences for his performances in such diverse and iconic roles as King Arthur, Harold Hill, Inspector Javert, Atticus Finch, and dozens of citizens from Tuna, Texas. He was the Manager and Artistic Director of the Old Opera House Theatre Company in Charles Town, WV from 1995-2003. Bill has hosted two radio talk shows, worked in a print shop, managed three restaurants, delivered singing telegrams, and, if needed, can juggle, eat fire, and ride a unicycle. He is married to Michelle Morgan and has a B.A. and B.S. from Lambuth University and his law degree from Wake Forest School of Law. He is an attorney and mediator at Morgan Law, PLLC, directs the choir at Archangel Gabriel Orthodox Mission, and serves on the boards of the Catawba County Arts Council and the Green Room Community Theatre.

Brian Clement

Brian Clement has spearheaded the international progressive health movement for more than three and one-half decades. He is the Director of the renowned Hippocrates Health Institute, West Palm Beach, Florida where he facilitates the implementation of innovative natural health treatments and programs. The author of numerous books in which he explores various aspects of health, spirituality and natural healing, Brian’s progressive ideas on total wellness, coupled with his practical science experience, have provided him with the opportunity to travel to more than 25 countries motivating the public to take action to improve their lives. Most recently, he was commissioned by government-supported organizations to establish, organize and direct health programs in Denmark, Switzerland, Greece and India.

Dennis Stamper

Dennis Stamper earned his Master of Social Work degree from UNC Chapel Hill and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. He attended St. Paul School of Theology and is a Commissioned Lay Pastor in the Presbyterian Church (USA). He has worked in the fields of child welfare and chronic pain management and currently works as a hospital chaplain. Dennis is a musician/songwriter. He regularly organizes medical teams to work in Chiapas Mexico.

Edie Raether

Roben Farzad

Roben hosts the show Full Disclosure, which airs on NPR One and iTunes (FullDRadio.com). He is the author of Hotel Scarface: Where Cocaine Cowboys Partied and Plotted to Control Miami. A regular guest on NPR, he was formerly senior writer for Bloomberg Businessweek, and has appeared on MSNBC, CNN, The PBS NewsHour, C-SPAN and CNBC. Roben's bylines have been in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Boston Globe. He is a graduate of Princeton University’s School of International Affairs and the Harvard Business School

Scott Regenbogen

Scott Regenbogen is a design professional with 35+ years of industry experience. He graduated from the Philadelphia College of Art with a degree in wood working and furniture design. While working for high end furniture companies in Connecticut and North Carolina, Scott has had the benefit of working with well-known designers and a variety of companies all across the globe. He started Regenbogen Studios, a Product Development and Design company in March of 2017. The company specializes in 3D Printing, Custom made products, 3D CAD, Visualization, and Design.

Steven Clarke

Dr. Steven Clarke is a native of Burke County. His early ventures into the deeper pools of knowledge began with participation on the debate team in high school. It was there that he began to learn that many problems common to the human race are fraught with layers of complexity. Finding the best solution to these challenges often involves a careful analysis of competing values. Perfect solutions are, at times, hard to come by. Steve pursued music as a career and has spent nearly 30 years teaching at the collegiate level, working full-time in church music, and now, teaching high school choral music. In addition, he teaches the IB course called, Theory of Knowledge at Hickory High School. The primary focus of this class is to help students become more empathetic toward opposing viewpoints and open to nuanced perspectives. A quick scan of your Facebook wall will remind you how important this is for future generations. Steve is married to Debbie. They have six children ranging in age from 21 to 11. They enjoy making Hickory their home. Steve is also the Musical Director at Hickory Community Theatre and Minister of Music at First Baptist – Hickory.

Turney Duff

Turney Duff is the author of The New York Times Best Seller, The Buy Side: A Wall Street Trader’s Tale of Spectacular Excess. Turney is a public speaker, journalist, and television personality. As a “B” student from Ohio University he became an unlikely Wall Street trader, and soon rose through the ranks. His career on Wall Street (1994-2009) spanned the fifteen most dramatic years in the history of finance, from his early years at Morgan Stanley to the infamous Galleon Group, then co-founded a billion dollar hedge fund. Turney earned over $10 million in his career and then lost it all, falling prey to the trappings of Wall Street: money, sex, drugs, alcohol and power. Now a cautionary tale, he speaks to audiences all over the world about the keys to achieving happiness and balance in spite of success. Turney is currently the Wall Street consultant for Showtime series Billions (2016) starring Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti. In addition he is a regular contributor to CNBC.com, as well as a featured commentator on CNBC’s prime time television show The Filthy Rich Guide.
