Alexandra Calmeira

TED-Ed club member

Alexandra Alexis Calmeira was born March 31, 2003. Allie (her preferred nickname) is 16 years old and has an older brother who is a non-commissioned naval warfare officer who is finishing his second year at the Royal Military College of Canada. Right now, Allie is enjoying being an “only child”, if you don’t count her 5-year-old English bulldog and 1-year old bunny. She attended St. Elizabeth Seton elementary school and graduated with honors and received the art and French awards. Allie is now in grade 10 and goes to St. Mary Catholic S.S. where she is surrounded by her loyal and quirky friends. She loves science and physical education; keeping both her mind and body in tip-top condition. Outside of school Allie trains as a kickboxer and is working towards competing in matches. After high school Allie wants to pursue a degree in Forensic Anthropology so she can advocate for victims who can no longer advocate for themselves.

Charlene Rocha

TED-Ed Club Member

Charlene Rocha is a Grade 10 student at St.Mary C.S.S.. When she's not pouring the milk before the cereal or annoying her friends, she's thinking of new ways to change the world. She's an activist for human rights and a part of the fridaysforfuture climate change movement. Through her talk, she hopes to inspire others.

Jim Zub

Author

Jim Zub is a writer, artist and art instructor based in Toronto, Canada. Over the past eighteen years he’s worked for a diverse array of publishing, movie and video game clients including Marvel, DC Comics, Disney, Capcom, Hasbro, Cartoon Network, and Bandai-Namco. He juggles his time between being a freelance comic writer and Program Coordinator for Seneca College‘s award-winning Animation program. His current comic projects include Avengers: No Road Home, a weekly epic event for Marvel’s Mightiest Heroes, Champions, Marvel’s team of teen superheroes fighting for the future, Dungeons & Dragons, the official comic series of the world’s most popular tabletop role-playing game, and Wayward, a modern supernatural story about teens fighting Japanese mythological monsters.

Kate Davis

Comedian

A speaker, writer, mother, comedian and actress, Kate Davis has the unique ability to find humour in any situation and to offer creative solutions to defuse the frustrations in the home and workplace. Theatrically trained in England, Kate returned to Canada to a successful run on Canadian stage. From the theatrical stage to the many stages of motherhood, Kate found her newest passion at an open mike one night at a local comedy club. Now, a twelve time nominee at the Canadian Comedy Awards and star of her own hour-long comedy special on CTV and the Comedy Network, Kate has appeared on Breakfast Television, Star TV, Toronto 1, Prime, WTN, TVO and CBC Radio One “The Debaters”. Kate tours globally with her comedy, speaking and has opened for President Bill Clinton and Barbara Walters.

Luther Mallory

Musician/ Performance Coach

Luther Mallory is an Artist and Performance Coach specializing in Stage Psychology. As a coach, he has worked with more than 500 artists over the last 5 years, helping them overcome the mental and emotional barriers they face while performing on stage. Luther has worked with artists represented by Universal, Sony, Warner, Coalition Music, The JUNOS, Maple, and many other industry leaders. He is the Performance Coach for Canada's Music Incubator's acclaimed Artist Entrepreneur Program, and for the Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class. Luther's stage expertise comes from 1000 shows as front man of his former Toronto-based band, Crush Luther, as well as his current project, House Of Goobata.

Marianne LeFever

Innovation and Sustainability Strategist, Design Thinker

Marianne Lefever is an architect and a strategic thinker with over 10 years of experience in climate mitigation and sustainable city design. After an exciting career as a structural engineer, renewable energy consultant, innovation consultant, and futurist, she returned to her first love of sustainable city design. After living all over the globe, she landed in Toronto. From here, she is currently working with a Dutch urban planning studio to transform cities around the globe into healthy environments and communities.

Effortlessly harnessing their indie-pop roots with a breath of fresh air, the Toronto, ON trio — Brendan DiStefano [singer], Shane Penhale [guitar], and Josh Podolak [drums, programming] — not only envision where they aspire to be, but collectively carry an established artistic history that placed them together today. After months of constant songwriting and collaboration abroad, relentless identity groundwork began behind-the-scenes. Throwback 808 drum machines, vintage synthesizers, and dreamy delay guitar samples filled the pre-production room, perfectly capturing the new group's upbeat personality. Being no strangers to Toronto-based producer Derek Hoffman, Navigate the Sky recorded their addictive debut single "Like a Drug" released globally July 2018. The boys arrive fashionably into the music scene with substance and a spirit sure enough to blossom stupendously.

Nick Kinder

Communication Coach

A keynote speaker, communication coach, and eternal entrepreneur, Nick is passionate about innovation and communication. A former actor, teacher, and comedian, Nick was the founding partner, creative director, and speaker coach at engine communication + events. In 2013, Nick opened his own coaching practice Kindler & Company, focusing on developing the communication and speaking skills of leaders, entrepreneurs, scientists and academics. He then joined TEDxToronto as a coach, eventually taking on the role Director of Programming. Nick is currently a partner and co-founder of Talk Boutique, a speaker development, speaker representation, and event curation company helping leaders communicate their ideas and innovation so it’s understood and embraced by the world. Nick is also the Head of Programming for SingularityU Canada, a global learning and innovation community using exponential technologies to tackle the world’s biggest challenges and build an abundant future for all.

Paulina O'Kieffe

Community Leader/Performer

Paulina O’Kieffe-Anthony is an award winning Toronto writer, performer, producer, arts educator and community advocate. A member of the League of Canadian Poets, her high level accomplishments include being featured in When Sisters Speak, producing the Words by the Water Literary Festival and representing Toronto as a national team finalist in the Canadian Festival Of Spoken Word both in 2015 and 2017. Paulina continues to be one of the main artist educators developing curriculum and teaching for established arts organizations and in schools across both Toronto School boards and beyond. Her work has been featured on Bell Fibe TV, Huffington Post Canada, AfroGlobal TV, Metro Morning and CBC Morning and has been published in a number of anthologies including “Guerillas of the Word” and “Feminism: Revist, Revise, Revolutionize.” Paulina is the recipient of the Toronto Community Foundation Vital People Award and was recognized as one of 150 Black Women Making Herstory.

Rachel Parent

Environmental/Food Activist

Since age 11, Rachel Parent has devoted her life as an environment and food youth activist, and a vocal advocate for climate change and social justice. She is the founder of Kids Right to Know and Gen-Earth.Org. At age 14, Rachel debated celebrity Host Kevin O’Leary on CBC Television. She is a recognized public speaker, including TEDxToronto and SXSW, Austin Texas, she is a blogger for the Huffington Post, and the recipient of the Rob Stewart Youth Eco-Hero Award.

Spencer Turbitt

CEO, Co-Founder of iApotheca Healthcare,

Spencer Turbitt’s entrepreneurial journey began at a young age with lemonade stands and hustling products he purchased in bulk for a profit. He spent the first two years of university running his own successful painting service franchise through College Pro Painters, grossing over $275,000 in sales in two summers of operations. During his last two years at school, Spencer co-founded iApotheca Healthcare, a pharmacy software company servicing over 1,000 pharmacies across Canada and the United States. Spencer also speaks at various events on education, entrepreneurship, branding and leadership. Having finished his undergraduate degree in April 2015, he is currently the CEO and Co-founder of iApotheca Healthcare, and splits his time between Toronto and Vancouver.

Sunil Singh

Math Teacher/Author

Sunil Singh was a high school math and physics teacher for 19 years. He has taught every grade level, and in every situation imaginable--from the socio-economic challenges of tough,urban schools in Toronto, Ontario to an International Baccalaureate School in Switzerland. His views on the purpose and potential for learning mathematics have been strongly fostered in this wide domain of experiences--that all students are capable of loving mathematics. Sunil has viewed mathematics as an adventure his entire life, and now mathematics is providing adventures for him in writing and traveling. He has given over 50 presentations on creative mathematics all over North America, including The Royal Conservatory of Mathematics in Toronto and The Museum of Mathematics in New York. Not only is he the author of Pi of Life: The Hidden Happiness of Mathematics and Math Recess: Playful Learning in The Age of Disruption, but he was also a regular writer for The New York Times Numberplay section.

Vanessa Milton

TED-Ed Club Member

Vanessa is a grade 10 student at St.Mary CSS. This is her first time on the tedx stage, and she is very excited about the opportunity. Her first love is music: she plays 4 instruments, loves composing, and is in her schools band. Her second love is writing: poems, songs, you name it. Most prominently, she likes to talk (probably too much) which is why she wanted to try her hand at a ted talk.
