In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Ilina Logani

Ilina Logani is an artist, writer, avid reader, and excellent midnight-conversationalist. A first-year student at Emory University intending to double major in Psychology and English, she is a strong supporter of blending STEM with the humanities. She is a debater with the Barkley Forum, a leader in Project SHINE (working with immigrants and former refugees), and the freshman representative for the Atlas Sentinel. In her free time, she likes to cook and talk politics with the people she cares about.

John Baugh

Professor of Psychology, Anthropology, Education, English, Linguistics, and African and African-American Studies

Professor Baugh is a renowned linguistics expert who has published extensively in that field, as well as in legal affairs, sociology and urban studies. Professor Baugh's primary research interest has been the social stratification of linguistic behavior in multicultural and multilingual nations. Initial interest in this area began with quantitative and experimental studies of linguistic variation among African Americans. These studies evolved into applied linguistic research devoted to policy issues in medicine, education, and law. Gradually his analyses expanded to include populations who suffered various forms of linguistic discrimination, including deaf communities, as well as speakers of languages or dialects who lack fluency in the dominant linguistic norms of their respective societies.

Julia Levy

Activist

Julia Levy has a passion for side projects. With her dad, she produces Peach and Prosperity, a podcast about Atlanta that they started when she moved home after a decade in New York City. She co-founded National Muffin Day, a philanthropic food holiday helping people experiencing homelessness while telling stories of ordinary philanthropists on her blog Why We Give. And previously, Julia wrote and performed about funny living situations with Roommate for Rent. By day, she works as a Communications Officer at the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation. She drinks a lot of green tea to make all of this happen.

Luanna Marques

Luana Marques is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and president-elect of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA). Recognized as a national and international expert in Cognitive Behavioral Therapies (CBTs), Dr. Marques teaches individuals how to utilize goal-oriented thinking and approach techniques to overcome their challenges and propel their lives. Dr. Marques’ book Almost Anxious educates the public about how worry and anxiety can interfere with happiness and productivity in their lives. At Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Marques’ research mission is to bridge the gap between science and practice in mental health by bringing evidence-based strategies to underserved populations.

Mathu Kamarasamy

Mathu Kumarasamy is the Program Director of Performance Analytics within the Office of Quality at Emory Healthcare. In his role, Mathu oversees the strategic reporting of clinical, financial, and process metrics which help drive the institution towards value-based care. Mathu partners closely with clinicians to identify ways to leverage and democratize data to better serve Emory’s patients and families. Outside Emory, Mathu enjoys converting others into analytics geeks while teaching General Assembly’s part-time Data Analytics course in Atlanta. Mathu is a graduate of Emory University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Neuroscience and Economics. A self-proclaimed “analytics evangelist” and aspiring data scientist, Mathu is passionate in leveraging data analytics, technology, and insights from the field of behavioral economics to help establish a culture of evidence-based, value-driven health care in the United States.

Miya Baily

Miya Bailey is an artist, businessman, and philanthropist based in Atlanta. Miya came to the city in 1996 after moving from his hometown in Asheville, NC. He has been tattooing in Atlanta for over 26 years and is the proprietor of City of Ink. In addition to tattoos, Miya is a fine art painter and filmmaker. He is a loving husband and father who is passionate about chasing his goals and dreams.

Nadia Bilchik

Nadia Bilchik is an internationally renowned television personality, speaker, communication skills trainer, and author. Nadia's unique and dynamic approach draws from her extensive experience coaching business professionals, delivering keynote addresses, conducting workshops, and interviewing high-profile figures. She has written three books on communication skills, focused on presence, personal branding, influence, and networking. Currently an Editorial Producer at CNN, Nadia has reported and hosted programs for CNN, CNNI, and MNet Television (South Africa). She has interviewed numerous luminaries ranging from President Nelson Mandela to Morgan Freeman, Meryl Streep and George Clooney.

Patrick Allitt

Patrick Allitt was born and raised in Derbyshire, England. He graduated from Oxford in 1977 and studied for the PhD in American History at the University of California, Berkeley. He has been a professor in the Emory History Department since 1988. He is the author of seven books, including I’m the Teacher, You’re the Student: A Semester in the University Classroom. He is also the presenter of ten video and audio lecture series with “The Great Courses.”

Paul Emerson

Paul Emerson, PhD, is director of the International Trachoma Initiative (ITI), a program of The Task Force for Global Health, and an Emory affiliate working for a world free from trachoma. ITI supports the global elimination effort by managing Pfizer’s donation of the antibiotic Zithromax®, which is distributed as part of comprehensive public health programs to eliminate trachoma. Dr. Emerson holds an adjunct position as Assistant Professor at the Rollins School of Public Health and is an advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. Emerson also serves as an advisor to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and is the Associate Editor for the Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He has been involved in many clinical and epidemiological trials conducted in Ethiopia, The Gambia, Ghana, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, South Sudan, Sudan, and Tanzania. He has authored more than 140 peer-reviewed papers."

Russell Cutts

Russell Cutts is an archaeologist and paleoanthropologist. He holds an M.A. (UGA’97) in Ecological Anthropology and Environmental Archaeology, has been a museum director, and is a consultant to indigenous First Nations of North America. In 1999, he was made an Honorary Member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Russ has taught thousands of people to make fires by rubbing sticks (in over 10 ancient methods) and has taken game with stone-age weaponry. Under his direction, Whitestone Farm, of Talking Rock, GA received Emory University’s Sustainability Award 2009, concomitantly holding USDA Certified Organic, Food Alliance Certified Sustainable, Certified Naturally Grown and Animal Welfare Approved status. He is a co-founder of Earthskills Rendezvous’, Inc 501(c)3, has presented for the American Museum of Science and Energy, The Culinary Institute of America (Hyde Park), WABE-National Public Radio, The State Botanical Garden of Georgia (among others) and continues to instruct widely for primitive technology events, universities and educational organizations. He is the author of Blackbird Dreams, WildFire – Fire Making Art, and (in-production) Native America Bites Back (with EBCI Paula M. Nelson and Chef John Matthew Wells). He is a PhD Candidate at the University of Georgia studying the human origins of technology—specifically, the control of fire—and Lecturer (Anthropology) for Oxford College of Emory University.

Sean Henry

Sean Henry is Founder and CEO of STORD, a technology-driven warehousing & logistics network helping companies distribute products globally. While attending the Georgia Institute of Technology in the Scheller College of Business, Sean worked in Supply Chain Optimization at a german-based manufacturer. Following this experience, Sean Founded STORD in 2016 with Jacob Boudreau. Since then, they have grown their team out of Atlanta, raised $2.75M, and partnered with global brands. Sean and STORD have been featured in the 2018 Forbes 30 Under 30 list, INC.com's Global Top 50 Emerging Entrepreneurs of 2017, and America's Top 30 Emerging Startups of 2017.

Sean Waytowitz

Sean Waytowitz is a first-year student from San Diego, California currently studying Psychology. He’s a music producer and a solo recording artist with music available on all streaming platforms. He’s also the author of the novel Cloud Atlantis, an Officer Candidate for the United States Marine Corps, and a member of Atlas Consulting Group, Alpha Tau Omega, and Emory’s Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society.
