When the British explorer James Cook visited the Polynesian kingdom of Tonga, he noticed that none of the locals would sit down or eat a bit of anything. When he expressed his surprise at this, they said that these were all ‘TABOO”’, which loosely translates to forbidden.
We treat conversations about periods, transgenders, the element of choice in parenthood, and sex the same way, by avoiding them altogether. All of us witness this behaviour on an almost-everyday frequency, and we at TEDxNapierBridge thought it's time to break the taboo around some of them.
We are back with the 5th edition of our salon-style event with the theme “RED LIGHT - BREAKING TABOOS”. It's time to crawl out of our comfort zone and talk about issues that have been buried under the label of taboo. It's time to transgress anachronistic boundaries and embrace the reality of everyday routine that has until now been taboo. It's time to break free.
