Byron Joel
Permaculturalist
Byron Joel is a student and practitioner of eco-agricultural regeneration with a focus
on mediterranean climate regions of the world. He explores and formulates ways in
which human populations may develop regenerative cultures at bio-regional levels,
anywhere in the world using Fremantle and the greater region of south Western
Australia as a working example.
Emily Bird

Emily Bird is a writer, Ecoburbia resident and has a PhD in statistics. She has a
passion for converting people with a negative perception of statistics into lovers and appreciators of the statistical way of thinking. Emily sees statistical foundations in everything from selfies to cuddly goats. She will show you that statistics is
interesting, intuitive and has the power to clarify the lens through which you view the
world.
James Eggleston
Energy Market Entrepreneur
James' qualifications are in Behavioural Science, Philosophy and Mechanical
Engineering; combined he examines the nexus between human and machine
behaviour – a perfect storm for innovating utility services. Building on his Doctoral
research unlocking Australian apartments to battery and storage technology, James
is part of a technology company using blockchain to turn the world's energy markets into an energy internet. Throughout his career James has always been described as a disruptive innovator and is motivated by shaping the world in the way that it ought
to be. With a simple software update to existing electricity infrastructure,
governments and the private sector can now accelerate the transition towards 100%
renewable energy, better utilise the existing network and reduce the cost of electricity for all. Together we can create an energy internet.
James Wickham
Body Artist/ Poet
James is a 'curator of humans,' an artist, a good soul, and a creative genius. He will be curating a team of body paint artists- the Rainbow Tribe- into an epic performance of perception vs reality..
Moira Clay
Senior researcher/ Director
Dr Moira Clay is a senior executive in the health and medical research sector and
Director of The Adventurers – a charity that began in Fremantle. She is a passionate
advocate for childhood brain cancer research and has been an Adventurer since
2012, personally raising over $100,000 for childhood brain cancer research. She will
share a story of hope about how ordinary people can inspire community and experts
world-wide to find answers for children with brain cancer.
Noel Nannup
PhD/ Public Speaker
Dr Noel Nannup is a well-respected Nyoongar Elder. He is a known story teller and cultural guide, instructor and mentor. Throughout Noel's life he has worked to
promote public awareness of the importance of caring for the environment. His career has been dedicated to educating young Western Australians about the rich
cultural heritage of Aboriginal people and their lands; and, throughout that process,
Noel has played an active and leading role in reconciliation.
Paola Magni
Forensic Entemologist
Dr Paola Magni is a forensic biologist with a key focus on the application of natural
sciences to crime scene investigations. She will explore the myths and uses of flies
throughout history and into today’s modern crime scenes. In doing so, she hopes to
change our perceptions on flies.
Sam Baron
Philosopher
Dr Sam Baron is Senior Lecturer in philosophy at the University of Western Australia and holds two grants from the Australian Research Council (ARC) on time. Sam will introduce both the physics and philosophy that underwrites the ‘end of time’. The idea that time does not exist has startling implications. If time does not exist, then a range of everyday notions seem to be meaningless; notions such as morality,
agency and causation.
