Bob Phillips

Non-Status Urban Mi’kmaq

Bob Phillips (Great Bear) is a non-Status Urban Mi’kmaq. Although a traditional Pipe Carrier, Bob is also very contemporary and holds a PhD in Indigenous Studies from Trent University. He also holds an MA in Fine Art History from York University. Bob Phillips also spent ten years as host of the Aboriginal Voices Radio Arts Review show discussing art, culture and contemporary issues with community members from across Canada and the Far North. Cameron Huang

Grade 11 Student

Cameron Huang is a grade 11 student at UTS. For the past three years she has been a leader in the UTS Indigenous Solidarity Committee (ISC), where she has had the opportunity to connect with amazing students and Indigenous leaders. Cameron believes that taking action on the promises we make, and the voices of indigenous and non-indigenous youth are paramount for reconciliation. Cameron’s work with the ISC inspired her to pursue further research on the meaning of solidarity with Youth Participation Action Research (yPAR) at UofT to advance the goals of the ISC and the greater Canadian community. Through ISC and yPAR she has developed a passion for social entrepreneurship and hopes to continue working towards innovative solutions with indigenous youth. Beyond her work with indigenous affairs, Cameron enjoys playing field hockey and working with the Best Buddies organization.

Madhu Manivannan

Grade 9 Student

Madhu Manivannan is a 14-year-old UTS student, serial entrepreneur, and Internet of Things (IoT) cybersecurity expert. She is passionate about IoT, AI, quantum computing, and entrepreneurship. Following the 2016 Dyn DDOS cyberattack in IoT devices, Madhu took it upon herself to create an app that will detect security vulnerabilities in IoT devices and provide remedy recommendations. Madhu has presented at major conferences such as TakeOverTO, TKS Showcase, Conrad Spirit Of Innovation Challenge, EDIT, and ElevateAI. She has also written a guest article for the Financial Post titled “Top three tips for success from a 14-year-old IoT security entrepreneur”.

Max Xu

Grade 10 Student

Whether it’s 2001: A space Odyssey or the 1983 Technology-thriller Wargames, the potential found within technology has captivated me. In the creation of AGI’s, Super Intelligences or Generative Adversarial Networks, the ability for humans to design and implement working systems is stressed to the limit. How do we control something more intelligent than we are? How can we create something similar to us? What does it mean to be human? All are questions that endlessly interest me, and drove me to create my talk. Beyond tech, I am an avid-debater, campaign worker and drinker of bottled water.

Noah Spitzer

Actor, Writer, Educator

Noah Spitzer is an actor, writer, and educator who holds a BFA (Honours) in Theatre: Performance Acting from Ryerson University. Since graduating, Noah has toured his highly acclaimed solo show, My Second Smile, across the country. He has received two Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations for his work as an actor at Young People's Theatre, with leading roles in To Kill a Mockingbird and Hana's Suitcase. As an educator, he has been a Teaching Assistant at Ryerson University and a Resident Artist-Educator at Young People's Theatre, as well as a guest artist. In 2016/2017, Noah was a Jury Captain for the Dora Mavor Moore Awards, in the Theatre for Young Audiences division. Noah is a proud member of Canadian Actors' Equity Association and ACTRA. He plays the role of Colin Fry in the upcoming independent feature film Georgetown, where he has the honor to share the screen with Academy Award-winning actor Christoph Waltz.

Robin Michel

Secondary School Teacher

Robin Michel is a visual art and interdisciplinary art and design teacher at UTS. Her passion for mixing technical, artistic and athletic pursuits can be seen through her work as staff supervisor for both stage crew and Show costume design and in her role as coach of the varsity and foundation cross country running teams. Teaching at the secondary level is Ms. Michel’s fourth significant career. Her other careers have included landscape architecture and urban design, art direction in filmmaking and the on-going parenting of two children. Ms. Michel embraces dynamic situations and environments and is looking forward to unearthing all of the opportunities in the Queen and Ossington neighbourhood and at the UTS “home away from home” at 30 Humbert.

Shreya Shah

Grade 7 Student

Shreya Shah is a grade 7 student activist working to improve the lives of indigenous communities through her school. She has a strong sense of value that distinguishes right from wrong and recognizes the importance of seeing everyone's perspective. She enjoys a wide variety of activities from soccer to music and loves experiences that allow her to network and meet new people. She also likes to share her thoughts with others through many mediums including public speaking and poetry. This talk is a new way for her to share her ideas with the world.

Shriya Shah

Grade 9 Student

Shriya Shah is a grade 9 student at the University of Toronto Schools. Over the past 2 years, she has developed an interest in socioeconomic issues along with a passion for travel, which has been an inspiration for her TED Talk. She is a trained classical Indian dancer and has competed in international tournaments while playing competitive soccer. She has incorporated these interests, through her work as an executive member of charities like Change by Youth and The Oakville Leo's, where she has helped underprivileged youth gain access to sports gear. When she's not constantly updating her calendar or commuting on the go train, you could probably find her binge-watching terrible yet addictive teen shows while gripping onto a medium french vanilla from Tims.

Solival Menezes

University Professor, Consultant, Lawyer, Business Owner

Professor Solival Menezes holds a PhD in Economics, a Master's in Economics, a Master's in Business Administration (Finance), and a Master's in Accounting. He also holds bachelor's degrees in Economics (BS Ec), in Business Administration (BBA), and in Law (LLP), and he is legally licensed as Lawyer in his home country. He is a university professor, business and economics consultant, and life coach, serving especially members of the board, CEO's, and succession programs.
