Theme: Roots/Routes

TEDxYouth@MountEverettRS is an independently organized TED event hosted by the Mount Everett Regional School in Sheffield, MA. This event will have a number of student, alumni, and community member talks. With the theme of Roots/Routes, we hope that all attendees will have the chance to learn more about the unique ideas and perspectives within our own community. Complimentary hors d'oeuvres will be provided.

Alice Maggio

Mount Everett Alumna

Alice Maggio is an advocate for place-based currencies and local economies. From 2012-2017 she worked at the Schumacher Center for a New Economics, starting as an intern and then as the Director of Programs and Executive Director of BerkShares, the Berkshire region’s local currency. Her work has focused on educating people in her own community and around the world about the role that local financial tools and institutions play in the development of vibrant, just, and sustainable economies. Alice has been interviewed by Paul Solmon for the PBS NewsHour and by Henry Rollins for the History Channel. She represented BerkShares and the Schumacher Center at International Conferences on Complementary Currency Systems in and Barcelona, New York, and Nova Scotia. A graduate of Mt Everett RS in Sheffield, MA, Alice received her B.A. in Sociology and French from Wesleyan University in 2010. She is currently pursuing her Master's degree in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts.

Dylan Moulton

Sales Manager, Mount Everett Alumnus

Dylan Moulton has spent his career in Sales with New York publishers and a Silicon Valley start up, managing global and regional sales teams; developing business models and pricing and; seeking ways to support equitable access to learning materials through technology and licensing. Throughout his career, and from being the fourth generation of his family to have lived in the Berkshires, he has held firm that commercial interests and small town sensibilities can reconcile when approached with proactive planning that factors regional and customer values.

Evie Kerr

Student

Evie Kerr is a well-traveled eighth grader with a creative imagination. She enjoys pronouncing words uniquely, spending time outside in the wild woods, and reading her favorite series (Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children). Along with baking and sleeping, Evie really enjoys traveling with her family. Evie likes cats, dogs, unicorns, whales, elephants, and maths.

Fiora Caligiuri-Randall

Homeschooler

Fiora Caligiuri-Randall is a 15 year old lifelong homeschooler born in the Pacific Northwest in the state of Washington. Her family moved to the Berkshires when she was eight months old. Fiora loves art and illustration! She is the 2017 winner of the Congressional Art Competition for MA District One. Fiora is the education intern at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge and she runs a small greeting card business. Fiora is a classically trained pianist as well as a folk singer/songwriter. She is the president of her 4-H Club, a 4H Ambassador, and has been published for her achievements in art and 4-H leadership.

Jane Burke

Educational Consultant for STEM and STEAM

Jane Burke comes from four generations of chemists but her first intention was to become a dancer. At Brandeis she became fascinated with chemistry and chose the path to helping young people love science while at Harvard Graduate School of Education. After living in New York, Cambridge, Pasadena, London, and Melbourne, she moved to a 200-acre farmstead in New Marlborough in 1980. Though fully dedicated to public education she started the Flying Cloud Institute in 1984 to bring new ideas to learning the sciences, engineering, mathematics, and the arts into the schools across Berkshire County and beyond. With husband Larry, she created the SMArt Summer Program for local children so they can engage with professional artists and scientists. She founded Young Women in Science in 2000. Retired, she works as a science educator adding early childhood STEM learning to her interests. One of the great rewards is her relationships with former students who are now doing amazing things.

Jeanne Lemlin

Educator

Jeanne Lemlin is a James Beard award-winning cookbook author and cooking teacher. After publishing five cookbooks and appearing frequently on the Food Network, she decided to become an English teacher. Why would she do such a thing? Poverty! Freelance writing does not provide financial security. Her career shift, however, turned out to be fortuitous. She discovered how much she loves teaching English. Wallowing in literature, poetry, and writing is her idea of fun. And she still gets to lose herself in culinary exploits.

Nadia Makuc

Student

Nadia Makuc is an eighth grader at Mount Everett. She enjoys learning about science and the natural world. She’s always loved animals and being outside. She has two cats, a dog, and rides horses as well. She’s thankful for her family helping her adventure into aquaponics. Especially Marya for giving up part of the room, her Mom and Dad for paying for it, and Justin for advising in building it. Nadia also wants to thank Mrs. Von Ruden for initially introducing it to her and Mr. Berlestein for troubleshooting. Currently she has basil and mint, and six gold fish named Sherbet, Dinner, The Bumble, Oreo, Piglet, and Florian. Nadia would be happy to answer any questions about aquaponics, or try to guide anyone who wants to start their own at nadiamakuc10@gmail.com.

Patrick Haiss

Student

Patrick Haiss is a human. He likes the following: writing, poetry, nonsense as wisdom, reading, playing piano, nature, dogs, cats, chickens, birds in general, whales, whales sleeping, the sound of whales, eating food, specifically apple pie, coffee, sleep, dreaming, day-dreaming, thinking nothing, “painting,” making spontaneous decisions unaware of the consequences, melancholy, popcorn, chocolate, nice people, when people are happy, temporary insanity.

Tes Reed

Nature Educator

Tes Reed has been taking kids into the woods for 14 years. For the past nine years she has also co-directed a girls' rites of passage program called Moon Tribe through Flying Deer Nature Center in New Lebanon, NY. Prior to getting lost in the wild, Tes worked for the state of Massachusetts as a criminal investigator for the Committee for Public Council Services. Once she and her husband began their family she reclaimed her roots to the natural world and home schooled her two daughters. This educational adventure is what led Tes back into the woods and paved the way for teaching. When she is not in the woods Tes teaches aqua aerobics at the local pools. She enjoys walking her dogs, working out, getting lost in her garden and traveling with her family.

Thomas R. Berkel

Autodidact

Thomas Berkel was born in Freeport, NY, one of ten children, and raised in Alford, MA. He is a graduate of Mt Everett, the UMass (BA, Political Science), and the UConn (Masters, Economics) where he was the CT State Legislature Non-Duty Fellow. He spent 20 years at Bestfoods working in the areas of Treasury, Finance, Business Analytics, and Consumer and Customer Research and Intelligence. He worked for Cadbury Schweppes/Dr Pepper Snapple Inc, creating a brand service. Retired, he now volunteers his time in support of both local government and non-profit organizations. He is a substitute instructor where he engages and is humbled by middle and high school students. He is past President of the Board of Construct, Inc., has served on the Board of a large NY Healthcare provider, is the Secretary to the Board of Governors of the Wyantenuck Country Club, a member of the Finance Committee of the Town of Egremont, where he is a resident, and a Board member of the Mass Golf.
