Theme: Notion of a Nation

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Ailbhe Kenny

Lecturer in Music Education

Dr Ailbhe Kenny is a lecturer in Music Education at Mary Immaculate College. She is a EURIAS fellow (Hanse Institute for Advanced Study, 17-18), Fulbright Scholar (Teachers College and New York University, 14-15) and holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge. Ailbhe has held previous positions as a primary school teacher, research fellow (DCU) and as Arts and Education Officer at ‘The Ark’. She is actively involved in community projects, including directing the MIC Children’s Choir and working in asylum seeking centres. Ailbhe’s research is widely published internationally and she is the author of Communities of Musical Practice (2016) and co-editor of Musician-Teacher Collaborations: Altering the Chord (2018). Dr Ailbhe Kenny’s talk will address the special place of music in the lives of the children of asylum seekers.

Áine Gallagher

Social scientist | Comedian |

Áine Gallagher is a social scientist with a masters in Health Promotion, working in community engagement at NUI Galway. She is the coordinator of Bright Club Ireland, a national initiative which trains academics to perform comedy to discuss their research. She is also a professional comedian with performances at major international and national festivals including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Kilkenny Cat Laughs and Vodafone Comedy Festival. With her unique deadpan style, Áine paves the way for how comedy and education can overlap, focusing on her areas of interest namely; social inclusion and promotion of the Irish language.

Alanna O'Malley

Extraordinary Professor in United Nations Studies

Alanna O’Malley is a historian of the United Nations, Congo and internationalism. Her interest in the UN was inspired by the commitment of Ireland to ideas about international order. Her driving motivation is to change how people think about the UN and reassert its importance for our everyday lives. She was a Fulbright Research Scholar at the History Department of George Washington University in Washington D.C. She is currently an Extraordinary Professor in United Nations Studies at Leiden University/The Hague University. She will talk about new ways to think about the United Nations.

Brian Barry

Lecturer in Law

Brian Barry is a lecturer with the Department of Law at the Dublin Institute of Technology. He has a law degree and a PhD from the School of Law, Trinity College Dublin and is a qualified solicitor. He has undertaken research programmes as a visiting scholar at Columbia University, New York and the University of Toronto. Brian’s main research interest is in how judges make decisions. His talk explores how judges can make better, fairer decisions if they learn about, and participate in, experiments testing for errors in their decision-making.

Elaine Byrnes

Doctoral student in Psychology

Elaine Byrnes, is a Doctoral Researcher at the School of Psychology, NUI, Galway. Her research area of interest is sexual behaviour, particularly the communication of consent. She co-leads the development of Smart Consent Workshops, and has been a facilitator of these workshops with third level students at NUI Galway and other institutions throughout Ireland. She has contributed to the Human Sexuality, Social Psychology and Developmental Psychology modules as a lecturer. At second level she co-facilitates a module in sexual health. Elaine is a regular media contributor on issues related to sexual behaviour, education and consent.

Emilie Pine

Associate Professor of Modern Drama

Emilie Pine is Associate Professor of Modern Drama at University College Dublin and a Fulbright Alumna from Ireland to the University of California Berkeley. Emilie is Editor of the Irish University Review and Director of the Irish Memory Studies Network. She is PI of the Irish Research Council New Horizons project Industrial Memories a digital humanities re-reading of the Ryan Report on institutional child abuse. Emilie has published widely in the field of Irish studies and memory studies, including The Politics of Irish Memory: Performing Remembrance in Contemporary Irish Culture (Palgrave, 2011). Her first collection of personal essays, Notes to Self, is published by Tramp Press (2018).

Joe Slattery

Addiction counsellor

Joe Slattery is an addiction counsellor in a community setting. He specialises in working with adolescents who have substance misuse issues. Joe is the Irish network coordinator for the Equine Assisted Growth & learning association (EAGALA) and currently the only member in Ireland with advanced certification in this modality. Joe’s talk will focus on the benefits of the EAGALA model when working with youths with emotional and behavioural issues. He will talk about his own experience of growing up in a socially deprived area of Ireland and how horses helped him cope in that environment.

Philip McKinley

Chaplain

Philip McKinley is a Chaplain at Dublin City University and a singer/songwriter & co-founder of Discovery Gospel Choir. He works in faith-based reconciliation & social inclusion initiatives, his talk will explore Why every nation needs its own harp.

Roisin Hyde

Architect and Doctoral Research Student

Ms Roisin Hyde is an Architect and Doctoral Research Student at QUB School of Natural & Built Environment. She received her Bachelor of Architecture from UCD, became a Chartered Member of the RIAI and practiced for over 15 years in the areas of Conservation Architecture and Sustainable Design. Her current research focuses on the development of a prototype high-performance, low-impact, cement-free geopolymer concrete cladding panel through the use of innovative automated technologies including 3D Laser Scanning, Point Cloud Modelling and 3D Printing. As a 2018-2019 Fulbright Research Student she will travel to UNC to produce a full-scale geopolymer panel with a durable self-cleaning, hydrophobic, hybrid nanomaterial surface, using local industrial by-product and waste materials.
