In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Andrea Gutierrez

Andrea Gutierrez in grew up in Lima, Peru and migrated to the US at the age of 15. She’s a proud 1st generation, non-traditional UCI alumna and currently works on campus as the inaugural Basic Needs Coordinator. In her role, she manages the daily operations and programmatic activities of the FRESH BasicNeeds Hub, which houses our campus food pantry and holistic resources and programs to ensure students basic necessities are met. She participates in campus wide efforts to address student basic needs insecurities and advises student leaders. She also serves as co-chair for the campus and Systemwide Food Access Security and Basic Needs Committee, which is part of the University of California Global Food Initiative. Andrea is passionate about food equity and access to higher ed and she is a recipient of the 2017 Dynamic Woman of UCI Award for Social Justice.

Ashely Villa

Ashley Rachel Villa, Esq. is manager and attorney to digital content creators and YouTube stars. She is also consultant to a number of brands and entertainment entities within the digital media space. Ms. Villa previously worked at StyleHaul, the pioneering YouTube multi-channel network focused on fashion and beauty. Prior to that, she worked at Sierra/Affinity LLC, specializing in international film and television licensing and distribution, feature film production, film finance and television development. She also previously worked at Lionsgate Entertainment Corp. under the Office of the General Counsel. While in law school, Ms. Villa interned in the business and legal affairs department at Fox Sports and was an extern for the Honorable Judge Margaret M. Morrow of the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Ms. Villa received her J.D. from Loyola Law School, Loyola Marymount University in 2011. She attended undergrad at UCLA, where she majored in Psychology and minored in Global Studies. She is currently a member of the California State Bar and is admitted to the U.S. District Court, Central District of California. She is a member of the Beverly Hills Bar Association (Entertainment Section and Intellectual Property Section), Independent Film & Television Alliance and the Non-Scripted Attorney Association. She currently resides in Los Angeles, California, with her maltipoo named Mochi.

Cesar Yuriar

26 year-old Cesar Yuriar is a spoken word poet of eight years, an future lawyer who will sit for the California Bar in July 2018, an aspiring science fiction novelist, and a survivor of Type-I bipolar disorder. Cesar graduated from UC Irvine with two bachelor’s degrees and highest honors, and proceeded to receive his Juris Doctorate from the University of San Diego, School of Law. Cesar’s vision involves opening a law firm that would cater towards gifted individuals that suffer from cognitive dysfunctions, as well as being a mentor that will usher in a safer generation for everyone.

Derek Sabori

After launching a career at Volcom in 1996, Derek held many diverse roles at the company before finally serving 5 years as the Vice President of Sustainability under the leadership of the CEO and the Sustainability Team at Kering, Volcom’s parent company. Mid-career, Derek received his MBA from the Paul Merage School of Business at UC Irvine and then pursued a goal of sharing his vision of a healthy & sustainable future for his two children by carving out a professional niche in Sustainability and by self-publishing a children's Eco-Action Adventure picture book. After 19 years at Volcom, Derek left the company to play a co-founding role at KOZM the yoga-centered, sustainability-driven lifestyle brand. Additionally, Derek is the founder The Underswell, a modern sustainability resource guide and advisory agency, and works with clients, big and small, allowing them to outsource their sustainability strategies and projects and integrate sustainability into their business and lives. Derek has recently served as a director on the boards of the Costa Mesa Foundation, the Orange Coast College Foundation, and PangeaSeed, an NGO dedicated to shark and ocean conservation, and is a part-time instructor and project coordinator at Orange Coast College.

Lindsay Freedman

While she was completing her studies at law school, Lindsay’s husband was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. After the diagnosis, Lindsay struggled to find recipes online that were both delicious and fit her husband’s dietary needs. Frustrated with the lack of recipes, she decided to start a food blog to share her creations and help others similarly situated. Though Lindsay focuses on low glycemic and gluten free recipes, her blog reaches a broader audience of readers looking to incorporate wholesome ingredients without skimping on flavor. Lindsay believes that just because you have dietary restrictions doesn’t mean you need to give up your favorite indulgences!

Michael Dennin

Professor Dennin earned his A. B. from Princeton University, and his M.A. and Ph.D. (1995) from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He held a postdoctoral position at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow and a Research Corporation Cottrell Scholar. Professor Dennin’s main research interest is systems that exhibit emergent properties. These include the behavior of complex fluids, such as foam and sand, as well as the complex dynamics of biological systems. He is well-known for popularizing science for the public. He has taught many online courses on the nature of science, including team teaching a MOOC based on the television program, The Walking Dead. He has appeared on a number of television programs, including Spider-man Tech, Batman Tech, Star Wars Tech, and Ancient Aliens. As Vice Provost of Teaching and Learning, and Dean of the Division of Undergraduate Education, Michael is dedicated to enhancing the undergraduate experience at UC Irvine. He oversees programs that connect students to a wide range of academic programs and services and supports faculty and TAs in their efforts to teach undergraduate courses.

Michele Goodwin

Professor Michele Goodwin is a Chancellor’s Professor at the University of California, Irvine with appointments at the School of Law; Program in Public Health; Department of Criminology, Law, & Society; Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies; and Stem Cell Research Center. She is the founder and director of the Center for Biotechnology and Global Health Policy at UC Irvine School of Law and its internationally acclaimed Reproductive Justice Initiative. Professor Goodwin serves on the National Board and Executive Committee of the American Civil Liberties Union and is an elected member of the American Law Institute and Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. She is one of the world’s leading authorities on the regulation of medicine, science, and biotechnology. Her scholarship defines new ways of thinking about the intersections of law, society, economics, and the human body. She is a prolific author. Her publications include five books and over 80 articles and book chapters on law’s regulation of the human body, including civil and criminal regulation of pregnancy and reproduction, reproductive technologies, human trafficking (for organs, sex, and marriage), and tissue and organ transplantation. Her recent works appear in or are forthcoming in the Yale Law Journal, Harvard Law Review, California Law Review, Georgetown Law Review, Northwestern Law Review, Texas Law Review, and the Hastings Centers Report, among others. Her scholarship is cited by courts, legislators, and featured in news and periodicals. Professor Goodwin’s editorials and commentaries appear in the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Forbes, Politico, Gene Watch, Christian Science Monitor, Houston Chronicle, Chicago Sun Times, Washington Post, AlterNet and Salon.com among others. She is a blogger for the Huffington Post and the Harvard Bill of Health and has been interviewed by local, national, and international news media. She is the recipient of awards recognizing excellence in scholarship, teaching, advocacy, and the promotion of human rights. She is the founder of the Institute for Global Child Advocacy and former Everett Fraser Professor in Law at the University of Minnesota. She served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago and as a Visiting Scholar at the University of California-Berkeley and Columbia University Law School. She is a highly sought after voice on civil liberties, reproductive justice and health, cultural politics, and human rights. Prior to law teaching, Professor Goodwin was a Gilder-Lehrman Post-Doctoral Fellow at Yale University.
