Bringing together a stellar line-up of speakers from a range of disciplines, TEDxRoyalCentralSchool is set to open the doors of one of the countries top drama schools for a day of exploration, inquisition and, most importantly, ideas.

Becky Moses

Becky Moses is a queer identifying poet, writer for performance, and facilitator. Her honest and candid words reveal her experiences of sexuality and gender identity, often exploring the concepts of intimacy, relationality, and kinship. She is currently pursuing queer methods in writing for performance as a means of exploring the political and activist history of the LGBTQIA community.

Cheri Shone

Dyslexia Tutor

Cheri Shone embarked on a degree as a mature student in her 40’s, she is dyslexic and the first in her family to study at this level. One thought she did have while studying was that she did not want to become a professional dyslexic. She is now a Specialist Support Tutor so that worked out well!

Student

Christian, a student at Central, has been dyslexic all of his life and as a child, wished he was a caveman (because Cavemen didn’t need to read or write!).

Clio Unger

Researcher & Dramaturg

Clio Unger is a researcher and dramaturg Currently, she is undertaking her PhD at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, London, where she works on the politics of the lecture performance and the distribution of knowledge academic and artistic institutions. She was awarded the International Federation for Theatre Research’s New Scholars Prize, and her essay was published in the International Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media. Previously, Clio has trained and worked as a dramaturg in Munich and New York City, where she worked with both theatre and performance artists as well as contemporary dancers. She is excited to share some of her current research with the TEDx community.

Daisy Bull

Daisy Bull is a nineteen year old actor/writer currently training at East 15 Acting School.

Elizabeth Kilbey

Consultant Clinical Psychologist

Elizabeth is a consultant clinical psychologist who has spent the last 15 years working with children both within the NHS and privately. She has a Masters in Child Development and during her career she has helped families to tackle everything from toddler tantrums to teenage meltdowns as well as more complex and challenging mental health difficulties. Her first book, Unplugged Parenting, was be published in September 2017. Elizabeth has three children of her own.

Ellen Pruyne

Impact Manager

Dr Ellen Pruyne has a master’s degree in education and a doctorate in human development and psychology. She is the Impact Manager at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and on the side is writing a comedic novel set in the world of 80s rock-n-roll. She believes that we have been much too permissive with our parents and must address their behavioural problems before it is too late.

Eratle Wang

Freelance film director, writer and producer

Eratle is a freelance film director, writer and producer, who just graduated from MA Actor Training and Coaching at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Her newly founded company Glorious Montage Ltd. aims to build up the bridge of cultural exchange in film industries between China and UK. As a Chinese woman who has been working in the British cultural industry over 5 years, Eratle will share her exploration of the notion of self under a Western gaze.

Evi Stamatiou

Actress, writer, director and creative producer

Evi Stamatiou is a Greek, UK-based, award-winning actress, writer, director and creative producer who works internationally across stage and screen. She has worked on the training of performers since 2003, in a variety of contexts, including schools, community settings, conservatoires and universities. She is close to completion of a PhD in Training the Socially Engaged Actor at RCSSD. She investigates how the application of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of taste and symbolic power to theatre-making can help performers unpick their own biases and engage broader audiences. She has published articles with academic publishers on practice research, performer training, political performance and musical theatre. Her work focuses on migration and she currently develops a musical on the subject. She brings together socially engaged theatre with comedy’s and musical’s entertaining theatrical language, with the aim to develop new audiences for socially engaged works.

James Barton Steel

Actor

At a time when most people cannot name an Ancient Greek or Roman story, much less understand their relevance, James explores the continuing impact that Ancient Greek and Roman stories still have on our lives, whether we realise it or not. James is an actor. He has spent years, balancing this with a career in business development, specifically in education. He also enjoys a fascination with the ancient world and before embarking down the acting path he studied a BA Hons Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at University of Warwick, where he combined a love of the theatre with an appreciation for where it all began. He want on to gain an MA in Acting where his thesis focused on the work of Steven Berkoff, specifically his reimagining and interpretation of classic stories. This talk is based on two strands of James' life that have shaped and defined him.

Leah Cowan

Politics Editor

Leah is the Politics Editor for gal-dem, a magazine written by women of colour and non-binary people of colour. She also works at Imkaan, a black feminist organisation which is dedicated to addressing violence against Black and minoritised women and girls. Leah writes and speaks about race, gender, migration and state and border violence.

Molly Wilson

Molly is a third year Applied Theatre with Writing for Performance student at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Molly writes and creates theatre that aims to interrogate the nature of both public and personal identity. The performance that she will present at TEDx specifically questions how we react to identity being decided for us. In a world of labels, how do we self identify? In a world of boxes, how do we break out?

Ramatoulie Bobb

Writer

Ramatoulie is a recent graduate of The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. A writer and film enthusiast, she spends most of her time introverting in cinemas, bookshops and her room, all whilst daydreaming about the hundreds of stories she’s eventually going to write.

Selina Busby

Applied Theatre Professor

Selina Busby is an academic and theatre practitioner who makes performances with community groups at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. She is a principal lecturer in Applied Theatre, teaching on both the BA Drama, Applied Theatre and Education and the MA Applied Theatre courses. As a practitioner, she works in prison settings, youth theatres, and with young people living in adverse conditions both in the UK and internationally, with current projects including work with communities who have experienced homelessness or who live in informal housing settlements in India and New York and also those in the prison system in England and in Malta.

Shirley Anne Tate

Professor of Race and Education and Director of the Centre for Race, Education and Decoloniality

Shirley Anne Tate is Professor of Race and Education and Director of the Centre for Race, Education and Decoloniality in the Carnegie School of Education, Leeds Beckett University, UK and Honorary Professor (Chair Critical Studies in Higher Education Transformation) at Nelson Mandela University, South Africa. Her area of research is Black diaspora studies broadly and her research interests are institutional racism, the body, affect, beauty, 'race' performativity and Caribbean decolonial studies while paying attention to the intersections of 'race' and gender. She has written widely on these topics.
