This TEDxYouth event is about breaking down barriers built up by common myths, stereotypes, and societal norms. TEDxYouthUWCAD aims to inform, influence, and inspire the audience, because sometimes, people just need a platform to say that's not true.

Carsten Niemann

Physician researcher and Hematologist

Carsten Niemann is a renowned Danish physician researcher and hematologist. In this years event, he will sharing updated and new ideas as to whether or not chemotherapy for cancer is still the best option in the 21st century.

Architect

He is an architect and regional planner graduated from Florence University (Italy). Specialized in conservation and management of historic towns and landscapes, he joined UNESCO in 1998 (Namibia, Angola and Mozambique). He is an author of more than sixty papers, articles and book chapters on historic towns, cultural landscapes and cultural management, Giovanni Fontana Antonelli is co-editor of the two-volume publication “Bethlehem Area Conservation and Management Plan” (Paris: 2012) and the photographic book “The Land That Remains” (Berlin: 2016). Since August 2017 he has been engaged in the restoration, rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Old city of Mosul in Iraq. In his talk Giovanni will be focusing on "Heritage and truth".

Jonas is a 17 year old first year student currently studying at the United World College of the Adriatic. Jonas is very interested in the topic of how Populism always focuses on things that are not true or wrong, and never on actually searching for solutions. Jonas has been involved in various past events that successfully reached their goal and impacted many people’s lives. Now Jonas wants to bring all of his experiences to the stage and present them to a wider audience. “I hope I will be able to provide my insight also, based on the previous events and ideas that I founded back home, which managed to reach a gigantic amount of people.”

“Oh no, that’s not true, it’s just a phase, don’t worry, it will pass;” the sort of standard phrase often used in an attempt—a rather lazy one—to make someone feel better, especially during times of emotional distress. What if it wasn’t a phase? What if there is indeed something to worry about? What if it won’t pass unless it is given the proper attention it deserves? There are many preconceptions revolving the topic of Mental Health that are simply false. Modern-day myths and legends that, instead of helping us better understand our mental well being, cloud our vision from a real and potentially mortal threat. Where are the personal stories that reveal the truth?

Stoc is a 19 year old second year student currently studying at the United World College of the Adriatic. Stoc is very interested in the topic of addiction to smartphones and how each one of us denies our addiction to endlessly checking the screen of our phones. Stoc is very passionate about his topic and can’t wait to bring it to the stage infant of a wider audience. He aims to raise awareness about the topic and also inspire people to think about what actually lies behind this topic. “It is a lot about questions, asking whether the Like button is just a Like button, created without much thinking or if there is a psychological process behind that makes you spend more time as you like more?”

Tiril is a 18 year old first year student currently studying at the United World College of the Adriatic. When Tiril was thirteen, she noticed herself engulfed in social media outlets which glorified and romanticised mental illnesses. These poems, pictures, and quotes introduced impressionable youth to a glamorized depiction of mental illness, which masked the true reality behind what it meant to have a mental illness. Tiril’s speech will emphasize how mental health is often romanticised on social media platforms. Through the sharing of personal anecdotes, she will also underline her realization that this depiction of mental illness masks what’s really going on – and therefore, is not true.
