In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

James Pearce

Founder at Phone Credit for Refugees and Displaced people

Founder and creator of what started as a Facebook Group “Phone credit for refugees and displaced people” turned into an organisation that provides vital phone credit to refugees and displaced adults and children around the world. The Facebook group created by James from his computer following an eye-opening trip to Calais. Giving the gift of communication to people who are seperated from family and friends, miles away from home and in very uncertain circumstances. They have supplied over 700,000’s worth of phone credit to displaced adults and children allowing them to make contact with loved ones, stay up to date with news from home and even summon emergency life saving assistance. Over 70,000 Facebook followers and 700,000 worth of top ups for people who need it most. James talk will cover the small thread of where compassion and responsibility end. Showing his perspective of what a community is ? What do we define as 'our own'. How this allowed him to find a creative solution.

Lizzy Welby

Teacher and Author

Lizzy Welby teaches English Literature at the College Fançais Bilingue de Londres. She is an elected Council Member of The Kipling Society and has edited, with an introduction, Rudyard Kipling: Selected Verse (CRW Publishing, 2012). She has published articles on Rudyard Kipling, Angela Carter and Sylvia Plath. She was awarded third place at The Bridport Prize for her short story, ‘Jugged Hare’ in 2012 and is also winner of the 2014 Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition for a story entitled, ‘The Breakers’. Her latest publication, ‘Configuring Cognitive Architecture: Mind Reading and Meta-Representations in Ulysses’ is collected in Cognitive Joyce (Palgrave Macmillan, March 2018). She has a firm belief that teaching is transactional and encourages her students to decode literary texts through the lens of their own independent critical thinking, which is the topic of her paper. She communicates and inspires in a way that resonates with young people.

Stephen Chippeck

Barrister

Stephen was appointed to the Attorney General’s Panel of Prosecution Advocates for 6 years. Stephen lectures on such topics as public interest immunity for police officers, immigration officers and social workers and the interface between family law and criminal law to local authorities and police forces. Stephen Chippeck has over 20 years experience in criminal law and will speak about the status quo and what can be done to change the existing cycle of misery for both drug users and the victims of crime.
