In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Akash Gupta

Ania Ulrich

Dr. A.C. Ulrich, Ph.D., P.Eng. is a Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Associate Dean (Outreach) in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta. Dr. Ulrich has worked on developing biological remediation techniques for contaminated soil and groundwater. Her work has dealt with contaminated sites in the United States, Canada and Europe, Alberta’s oil sands and their water management practices and Indigenous communities and their relationship to water. Dr. Ulrich’s outreach work focuses on improving student access to and success in the engineering program at the University of Alberta.

Corey Poirier

Corey Poirier is a TEDx, MoMondays and PMx, Speaker, and a multiple-time bestselling author. He is also the host of the top rated ‘Conversations with PASSION’ Radio Show, founder of The Speaking Program, and he has been featured in multiple television specials. A columnist with Entrepreneur and Forbes, he has featured in/on CBS, CTV, CBC, and is one of the few leaders featured twice on the popular Entrepreneur on Fire show. He has also interviewed over 4,000 of the world’s top leaders. One of his recent talks took him to New York City where he had the extreme pleasure of speaking to At-Risk Youth at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Boys & Girls Club. A father to his young son Sebastian, boyfriend to Shelley and a father to 3 fur-babies, Corey is also a practicing Yogi and Rock Recording of the Year Nominee.

Henry Su

Henry is in his final year of Chemical Engineering at the University of Alberta. He has enriched his university career with extracurricular experiences including launching a rocket at the Andoya Space Centre in Norway, shadowing the CEO of a mid-cap company, and leading the Interdisciplinary Consulting Association. Henry also enjoys hiking, skiing, and playing guitar. An avid follower of TED, Henry loves listening to talks that explore the human condition, particularly Brené Brown’s “The Power of Vulnerability” and Dan Gilbert’s “The Surprising Science of Happiness”. He is also deeply interested in automation and its impact on the future of work. During his summer after graduation, Henry will intern at a self-driving truck start-up in Silicon Valley. After which, he will join global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company for full-time work.

Jason Morris

Jason Morris is a husband, father of three, lawyer, and computer geek. Once a self-taught programmer and database analyst, he now works at Round Table Law LLP, a virtual, paperless, cloud-based, automated law firm that he started in 2012. In addition to board games, video games, and Dungeons & Dragons, in his spare time Jason is a founding organizer of the Edmonton chapter of Legal Hackers. He is currently working on his LL.M. in computational law at the University of Alberta. His research is on artificial intelligence tools for the automation of legal advice. He was invited to the inaugural TBD conference for innovative small firm lawyers in St. Louis in 2016, and in 2018 will present at the University of Alberta Legal Innovation Conference, the Alberta Legal Technology Conference, and at seminars for the Legal Education Society of Alberta.

Jeremiah Ellis

Jeremiah Ellis is a third year Political Science and English student at the University of Alberta and is a creator of the initiative, The World Mosaic Project. The World Mosaic Project is an international campaign that was launched at the University of Alberta in December of 2015 to create a counter narrative against rising online hate, xenophobia and Islamophobia and reaffirm universal values of diversity and multiculturalism. Last year, Jeremiah served as the Canadian delegate at the 10th UNESCO Youth Forum in Paris, France. He has also spoken at various events including several panels at the Canadian Human Right’s Commission’s Beyond Labels Symposium in Ottawa and WE Day Alberta.

Manu (Swish) Goswami

Swish Goswami is a 20 year old TEDx speaker (signed with the National Speakers Bureau and The AAT Project), venture capitalist (at JB Fitzgerald Venture Capital founded by NBA player Trevor Booker), LinkedIn Youth Editor (over 60K followers) UN Youth Ambassador and serial entrepreneur. After successfully building Technotronics, Swish is now the founder and CEO of SuperFan, a new age media company building technology to help influencers, brands and agencies discover and reward their top fans. Swish also sits on various boards including at Dunk (media network of 10M followers hyper-focused on basketball) and the League of Innovators (Canadian charity started by Ryan Holmes, CEO of Hootsuite). Swish has been published in over fifty national and international publications and has notably been inducted into Plan Canada's Top 20 under 20, recognized as Startup Canada's Young Entrepreneur of the Year and and won the United Nation’s Outstanding Youth Leadership award.

Michaela Mann

Michaela Mann is a Team Lead at the Students' Union at the University of Alberta where she is responsible for providing leadership development programming and recognizing achievements of undergraduate students. Through her work and studies, she has focused much of her attention on how conflict can be productive and an important interaction in creating social change.

Mike Cameron

Michael David Cameron is a Canadian author, entrepreneur, philanthropist and advocate against Gender Based Violence. Cameron is known for his speaking engagements, seminars, and various writing projects. Mike is also the founder and managing partner of Axiom Mortgage, One of Canada’s largest independent brokerage firms based in Sherwood Park. He is also an active philanthropist, partnering with organizations such as Stop Abuse in Families (SAIF) society, and the White Ribbon Campaign. He is the Founder/Race Director of the Ignore No More Run for Respect, an awareness building, fundraising event targeting men to open the discussion on healthy relationships. Mike is an avid athlete having completed several Ironman triathlons and ultra marathons. His love of the outdoors has led him to take up climbing both rock and ice. Mike has taken personal tragedy and turned it into a lifelong purpose to affect change in others.

Navneet Gidda

Navneet Gidda is a fourth year undergraduate student at the University of Alberta who serves as the current President of the Political Science Undergraduate Association, Vice President of the University of Alberta New Democrats, and Constituency Assistant for The Honourable Rachel Notley. Over the course of her degree, Navneet has dedicated herself to opening spaces for youth to share in diverse political dialogue and generating opportunities for students to grow outside the academic realm. Paving the path for women in politics, Navneet leads a team of all female executives on her department association, was selected to represent her riding at last year’s ‘Daughters of the Vote’ conference in Ottawa, and spent this past summer as an Advocacy Intern in Washington, DC. As a leader, Navneet is committed to being a voice for marginalized communities and empowering fellow people of colour to run for political office.

Scott Hebert

Scott Hebert is a local middle school teacher, author, former TEDx speaker and educational innovator from Fort Saskatchewan where he teaches at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School. He has been on a crusade since beginning his career in 2009 to rid the stereotypes and archaic expectations of school. In 2013, he was awarded the Alberta Excellence in Teaching Award for his efforts in elementary physical education. He then moved into middle school sciences. After a year of planning, in 2015, Scott unveiled his latest effort to connect students to their education using the upcoming teaching methodology of gamification. Subsequently, his program was named the Best Gamified Project in Education globally in 2015 by the World Gamification Congress. His class has gained local, provincial, and international attention for its unique approach to answering the engagement crisis many of today's student face. Scott's speaking style uses humour, honesty and personal experience to connect with his audience.

Shahid Wazed

Shahid Wazed took risks from day one to transform his life from being an International student to founding Top Talent Summit - Canada's signature Talent Acquisition conference. He is an official member of Forbes HR Council and has won multiple International awards including an HR National Award for his unconventional talent acquisition strategies. His signature talk revolves around "The Power of Risk-Taking" because he believes that's the secret to having a fulfilling career!

Shelby Carleton

Shelby Carleton is a writer and a game designer. She first entered the gaming industry as an Associate Software Developer with BioWare Edmonton, and immediately knew a game studio was where she belonged. Shelby can’t wait to graduate from the University of Alberta with an English degree in hand, ready to take on the world and crush the patriarchy. In her spare time, she is either reading Pride and Prejudice, playing Ori and the Blind Forest, or hanging out with the person she loves most in this world (but probably the last one). Shelby would like to thank both of her parents for their endless love and support; and she would like to tell her dad—the catalyst for her love of games— “this one is for you.”

Tamara Beatty

Tamara Beatty is entering her eleventh season as a voice coach on the NBC Emmy Award-winning show “The Voice”, is a former competitive athlete coached by three Olympic coaches, and is a highly sought after consultant. She is known for her ability to draw out qualities in a person’s voice, presence, and performance that instantly make them appear more professional, authoritative, and memorable. Whether she’s working with celebrities, emerging artists, or business professionals, she aims to help people find and operate from their true, authentic voices so their messages have more meaning and impact. Tamara is an educator at heart who has a respected track record of creating education for multiple national and international organizations. She also uses her experience as an athlete to help individuals achieve peak performance, even under high pressure. With her combined experiences,Tamara is a force whose speaking style is precise, intuitive, and powerful.

Teddi Doupe

Since her teens, Theresa (Teddi) Doupe has worked to foster diversity and inclusion, to use strengths as a basis for development and learning, and to reframe disability management into accessibility management. Teddi's ties to UofA include a BEd (Special Education), teaching with the Fresh Start program, and 20+ years in accessibility services. Her work with the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services and Disability Service Providers in Post-secondary Education, Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta, UofA Employment Equity Advisory Committee and many others have led her to become a proponent of social models of disability, universal design as a social justice and inclusion tool, and diversity as a building block. She co-authored, with Dr. M. Samuels, the "Alberta Guidelines for Documentation, Assessment, and Services for Students with Learning Difficulties in Post-Secondary Studies" and received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta.
