Cynthia Merriwether-deVries
Professor of Sociology
Dr. Merriwether-deVries came to Juniata in 2001 after earning a doctorate in human development and family studies in 2000 from Penn State University. She earned a bachelor's degree and master's degree, both from Penn State in human development and family studies, in 1990 and 1994, respectively.
Dan Komar
Student
Mr. Komar is a senior at Juniata College. He is currently working on his senior thesis about psychopathy. His research is under supervision of Dr. Weldon who is also a speaker at this event.
David Hsiung
Professor of History
Dr. Hsiung is Charles and Shirley Knox Professor of History at Juniata College. David C. Hsiung earned a B.A. from Yale University (1983) and his Ph.D. in History from the University of Michigan (1991). He has taught at Juniata College ever since. At TEDxJuniataCollege, Dr. Hsiung will speak about the power of music and how it was used in the historic movements.
Jay Hosler
Professor of Biology
To the Juniata community, Dr. Hosler is best known as the Chair of the Biology Department, but to many children and young adults, he is a multiple award-winning graphic novelist and illustrator. At TEDxJuniata, Dr. Hosler will share his idea of how science comics can make an audience understand and care about aspects in the world that they never knew existed before.
Nick Miller
Farmer/Social Activist
Upon graduation from University of Vermont with a degree in Environmental Studies, Mr. Miller spent years volunteering in India and Thailand. The knowledge and skills he acquired from this experience helped him to open his farm in Huntingdon, where he utilized the natural materials to build.
Polly Walker
Professor of Peace & Conflict Studies
Dr. Walker is Director of Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies, and also Elizabeth Evans Baker Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies. Previously she was a research fellow in the Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, and Lecturer in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit, University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.
Rebecca Weldon
Professor of Psychology
Dr. Weldon joined Juniata's Psychology faculty in 2016 upon completion of her postdoctoral research assistantship at Cornell University. At TEDxJuniataCollege, Dr. Weldon will be speaking about how we can improve our decision making, despite how inconsistent we think we are.
Skukura Woods
Assistant Director of the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Juniata College
Ms. Woods is a graduate of Juniata College with a degree in Creative Writing and Communication Arts. In 2015, she came back to Juniata and is currently the Assistant Director of the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and the Plexus Program Coordinator. Skukura will share her thoughts on the steps and skills needed to self-actualize.
