Theme: Panorama - A Broader Perspective

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Asante Haughton

POET, THINKER, RESEARCHER

Passionate about positive social change, equality, and mental health, Asante Haughton has dedicated himself to endeavours aimed at building stronger communities. He is a poet, thinker, researcher, and a speaker who believes in people, global interconnectivity, and positive personal change. Not only has Asante made several TV appearances and been featured in the documentary, "Three Voices" he has spoken internationally, presenting in Canada, the United States, Colombia and most recently, Ireland. When not trying to save the world, Asante can be found laughing at his own jokes, Netflix'ing, watching cartoons, and being frustrated with Toronto sports teams. More than anything though, Asante aims to deliver a message of social awareness, social justice, community betterment, and above all, hope.

Domanique Grant

INDIE-POP SINGER/ SONGWRITER AND PERFORMANCE ARTIST

A fiery fun personality, Domanique Grant is an Indie-pop Singer/Songwriter and Performance Artist whose live show has been called a magical modern experience that incorporates mesmerizing vocals, performance art and live harpists. A rare combination of talent, entrepreneurialism and creativity, others merely call her story one that breaks convention. The development of Domanique’s debut EP album PLAYHOUSE exploring generational conversations linked to the meaning of “home” in urban cities, has led to international awards and invitations to perform in over half of the continents around the world. She has been selected as 1 of 8 Ambassadors to perform inside of The Toronto 2015 Pan American Games Athlete’s Village for over 43 countries in 3 languages. Her debut EP album PLAYHOUSE has also inspired a 5,000 square foot exhibition presented for the city of Toronto’s Nuit Blanche festival as an independent project to commemorate Canada’s 150th celebrations.

Eugenia Duodu

CEO OF VISIONS OF SCIENCE NETWORK FOR LEARNING

Eugenia Duodu holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Toronto and is the Chief Executive Officer of Visions of Science Network for Learning. As the CEO, she leads a team of passionate and talented colleagues whose focus is to provide engaging programs and opportunities for youth who are traditionally under-represented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Her goal is to help make a long-lasting positive impact in communities through STEM engagement and in-turn allow youth to unlock their potential.

Hani Al Moulia

ACCLAIMED PHOTOGRAPHER AND SOCIAL JUSTICE ADVOCATE

Hani’s award-winning photography can be found around the world and has been hailed by the New York Times, Fast Company, and American Photo Magazine, among others. Hani is a member of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s first Youth Council, where he advises on national issues such as employment, access to education, building stronger communities, climate change, and clean growth. In the spring of 2015, Hani was featured in a UN documentary that followed his family’s settlement from the refugee camp to Regina, Saskatchewan. In December 2015, he was honoured at the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression gala in Toronto for his courageous reporting.

Lauren Pirie

MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTIST AND FREELANCE ILLUSTRATOR

Lauren Pirie is a multidisciplinary artist and freelance illustrator who has lived on rafts, in tents, and in cities (mostly), and by the ocean whenever possible. Her intricate ink drawings live somewhere outside any of these places, often floating in the feminine realm, in a place where we can confront darkness in order to let go, or harness its power to take to battle in the real world. In the real world, Lauren has painted murals in Mexico, Toronto alleys, the Facebook offices, and recently curated a live outdoor mural event. Her work has appeared in magazines, children's books, galleries, installations, and film. Outside of the studio, she works to harness creative forces and collaborate on community projects. Lauren was a co-founder and the creative director of grassroots art and environmental organization, The About Face Collective, and has collaborated and worked with organizations like Sketch, Centre for Social Innovation, Skate4Cancer, DUDEBOX and SURJ.

Mark Goh

FOUNDER & CEO, CHARGESPOT

Mark is founder and CEO of ChargeSpot. He is responsible for the company's overall vision, strategy, and execution. Previously, Mark worked at Oakhill Advisors in London, UK. Prior to that, Mark worked in Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board, initially in Toronto and then London to build out their UK practice. Mark also serves on the board of the Brookfield Institute for Innovation. Outside of work, Mark enjoys playing guitar, wakeboarding, snowboarding and photography.

Mary Young

CEO & DESIGNER

As a young entrepreneur, Mary is the CEO & Designer of her self-titled clothing line that launched in 2014, MARY YOUNG. Since its inception, the brand has earned significant exposure in notable publications such as Refinery29, Flare and Elle Canada. In the spring of 2017, her company introduced the Self Love Club, a movement powered by the company to open up the dialogue within communities to focus on self love and acceptance. Mary’s vision is to empower women to embrace their individuality.

Sam Effah

MENTOR, SPEAKER AND ELITE SPRINTER

As a native Albertan, Sam has speed. He has represented Canada at three World Championships, three World University Games and the Commonwealth Games. As a two-time Canadian Champion in the 100m, Sam has an innate enthusiasm for sport and the Olympic movement. Struggling with injury during the last couple years has Sam hungry as ever – to re-establish himself as Canada’s best once again. Currently he is actively training for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Sarah Saska

CO-FOUNDER AND CEO OF FEMINUITY

We've figured out how to fly, stream movies on our phones, and have groceries delivered to our doorsteps, and now Dr. Sarah Saska is working to ensure that we build a future that brings everyone forward. While pursuing her Ph.D. at Western University, Sarah developed research on the importance of diversity in innovation. Realizing the importance of her research, Sarah became a fellow at MaRS Discovery District to gain the support she needed to translate her research into practice. Now, as the co-founder and CEO of Feminuity, Sarah works with innovative companies around the world to help them embrace diversity to design better products, processes, and services and to build company cultures where people can thrive. Sarah is a member of the Advisory Council for The MATCH International Women's Fund, she sits on the Board of Directors for Wen-Do Women's Self Defence, and she is named amongst Women’s Executive Network’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada.
