Anisha Wilmink
Teacher of High School English at UWCSEA Dover
After two years of learning how to ‘save the world’ in UWC Atlantic College, Anisha found herself lost as to how to meaningfully put this into action beyond high school. She will share how her past, her family and her experience at UWC led her to the realization that that ‘saving the world’ is a team effort and also quite straightforward: One simply has to find a way to be of use, and then become really really good at being useful. Central to this is the responsibility to speak up, and to listen.
Artist, Architect, Author and Programmer
Christian Waldvogel lives in Zürich, Switzerland, and works as an artist, architect, author and programmer. He views himself as a conceptual artist that deals with humanity as a species, on a planet and in the universe. He believes that understanding the “world” as such, that having a real sense of its properties and character as a sphere orbiting a star, enables us to achieve the sense of context necessary to become truly global citizens. In this respect, he creates projects that encourage people to look at life from an outside perspective with a critical distance.
Marine Biologist
Dr. Eliza Heery is a marine ecologist studying biodiversity and species interactions in urbanized marine environments. She received her PhD from the University of Washington, M.S. from Virginia Tech, and B.S. from Emory University, and has conducted research on urban marine ecosystems in the United States, Italy, Australia, and Singapore. Dr. Heery currently serves as a postdoctoral researcher at the National University of Singapore, where she studies strategies for enhancing biodiversity on seawalls and other artificial structures that are essential for adapting to sea level rise.
Julia Schetelig
Grade 12 student at UWCSEA East, Author, Film Producer, Social Activist
Julia, known for fighting for social justice both within and outside of UWCSEA, wishes to talk to us about what is beyond ourselves. From a young age, community service has been an important part of her life, particularly her time volunteering with refugees in Berlin. Her most recent endeavor is the organisation of an Initiative for Peace Conference in Cambodia (IfP Cambodia) focused on fostering peace among the local youth and equipping them with the tools to build and maintain peace.
Warren Su
Grade 11 student at UWCSEA Dover
Warren is passionate about what we placed beyond our planet: satellites. With a team of ten, Warren transformed a small ‘space’-themed school publication into a mission to design, build and test a micro-satellite for a student competition organized by NASA. They won, and were flown to Washington DC to accept their award. However, the project only lasted for a total of 12 months before Warren, as the founder, had to shut it down. He wishes to share some of the stories and lessons learned.
