In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Cuando solo faltaba un semestre para terminar la carrera de derecho, me di cuenta que no me gusta la idea de ser abogado. Carajo pudo haber sido antes y así me cambio, pero ya faltando un semestre decidí terminarlo y hacer la tesis. Al mismo tiempo comencé a ver comediantes con más detenimiento, a escuchar entrevistas de comediantes, a ir a espectáculos de humor pero ya no solo a reírme sino a estudiar. El día de la graduación me puse el uniforme obligatorio, toga y birrete, y sudé como nunca. Parece que el requisito de toda institución educativa Dominicana que se respete, es hacer la graduación en un sitio grande, sin aire acondicionado, y vestir a todas los graduados con ropa negra que los cubra entero.

Daniel “The Crow” Cuervo is the first Pro Skateboarder to come from the Dominican Republic. He was born on June 30, 1990 and started skateboarding at the age of 12. His first influence was DR National Skateboard Champion Ivan Marono who Daniel says “was killing the mini ramp” behind his “Marona” Skateshop in the Dominican Republic. By the time Daniel was 14 he started to compete and win in all the National Vert and Mini Ramp Competitions and realized he had found his calling- To become a top Pro Vert Skateboarder and Compete in the X-Games, the Dew Tour and any and all other Vert, Pool or Bowl Competitions in the World.

He has one of the largest image banks on the flora, fauna and natural landscapes of the Greater Antilles. His photography work also documents disappearing cultural traditions of the Caribbean islands.

Mariela aka Marimba Pichardo

Mariela Pichardo “Marimba” es una joven músico, cantante, multinstrumentista y compositora dominicana nacida en santo domingo, en 1988. Desde su niñez siempre manifestó inquietudes musicales, a la edad de cuatro años su madre le regala su primer instrumento, una guitarra. A los diez años comienza a experimentar con instrumentos de percusión menor, específicamente, güira y pandero. Su formación musical inicial fue autodidacta, pero al terminar sus estudios secundarios se matriculó en la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) donde por 4 años cursó una licenciatura en Teoría y Educación Musical. Durante estos años universitarios, a través de un colega músico, conoce al músico Antonio Vicioso, investigador de las raíces culturales de la isla y fundador de “Aumbata”. Un grupo musical basado en los ritmos tradicionales de Haití y la República Dominicana. Marimba forma parte de esta agrupación durante un poco más de 5 años.

Born in Santo Domingo in 1985, Nelson Carlo De Los Santos Arias studied cinematography in Buenos Aires and at the Edinburgh College of Art where he started making experimental films. He later received his MFA in film and video at CalArts where he directed a feature essay for his thesis, Santa Teresa Y Otra Historias (2015), which won the Prix Georges de Beauregard in Marseille and went on to be selected in Toronto. He signed several shorts including Le Dernier des bonbons (2011) and Lullabies (2014).
