Kaleidoscope—a toy in the shape of a tube that you look through to see different patterns of light made by pieces of coloured glass and mirrors. Our world is made up of a kaleidoscope of colours: the aureole in electric blue, the coral in fragrant flowers, and the energy in canary yellow etc. The abundance of colours also represents the ways in which we conduct ourselves in this patterned yet ever-changing world. In this kaleidoscope-like world, every turn may surprise you and define you as a “new” person, even though the colours and turns may appear to be flawed sometimes. Yet, beauty can be found in flaws as much as, if not more than in perfection.

The glitters inside the kaleidoscope never change in numbers, but a unique shape can be created in this tiny space with every spin. The situation inside the kaleidoscope is not unlike our experience in the world. We are living in a fast changing world with everything that is apparently changeable, attractive and distracting all at the same time. How humans can survive, navigate, and thrive in increasingly malleable environments is as much an art as it is a science. Our inspirational speakers would explore with our audience on innovation for the betterment of our community, as well as the individual self in relation to the world. If the only constant in our world is change, where do we find our belonging; how and should we fit in?

Artem Ansheles

In just four years after coming to Hong Kong, Artem Ansheles a.k.a. “Russian boy” has mastered Cantonese – one of the most difficult languages in the world – and clawed his way into the local entertainment industry. His story of success started with a courageous move when he was 17: he immigrated to Hong Kong all by himself. Since then, he has overcome many life-changing challenges and developed a new outlook on life.

Liyi Chen

Born and raised in Singapore, Liyi Chen has always been interested in politics and society. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Hong Kong with double majors in Journalism and Economics. Instead of pursuing a career in journalism, she worked as a financial auditor in Hong Kong. This work gave her the opportunity to visit and learn about the booming industrial towns of China. She subsequently returned to her native country, where her employment with the Singapore Economic Board inspired her to start her own social enterprise, Indie Mamashop. Her proactive endeavours instilled in her increasing determination to contribute to society. At the end of 2016, Liyi decided to take a year off from work to concentrate full-time on developing Indie Mamashop and also to embark on new community-related initiatives. In early 2017, she co-organised with her husband a series of dinner conversations in Singapore entitled “More Than Just” to promote social understanding on a perennially difficult topic: race and racism.

Patrick Lam

Patrick Lam, a veteran English teacher known to his students as “Patrick Sir”, is the founding chief of EDFLOW Learning Centre and Galilee International School. His secret to being an ace in the education field is to stay young and move with the times. He is also an author, a TV programme host, and an “edutainer” who produces series of fun educational videos to inspire great young minds.

Pink Lee

For nearly 10 years, Pink Lee, former financial journalist and founder of humanitarian charitable organisation Light On Charity, has performed volunteer work all over the world. Mongolia, Colombia, India, and Nepal are among the many places she has volunteered in. Her awakening journey began on a solo backpacking trip to Tibet, when a traveller told her, “If you hold on to what you have, all you have is just a little; if you open your hands and let go, all you have is the world.” Two years later, she quit her job and embarked on a life-changing journey that resembled the swashbuckling adventures of The Alchemist.
