Truth has been in the news a lot lately. Is truth absolute or can it be interpreted in different ways? Is truth universal? Are there varying degrees of truth?

Here at St. Lawrence the TEDxStlawrenceU team wants to open a dialogue about truth in our community. What does truth mean to you? How do you experience it in your daily life? What is its role here at St. Lawrence?

Gabriella Gurney

Student

Ella is a senior at St. Lawrence University double majoring in Conservation Biology and Performance Arts with a minor in African Studies. She is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, as well as Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society. She is a member of the St. Lawrence Track and Field Team and works in the Center for International and Intercultural Studies on campus. She studied abroad in Kenya in Spring '16 and has been in multiple dramatic productions on campus.

Grace Wetzel

Student

Grace Wetzel is a junior at St. Lawrence University with a Psychology major, a Biology Minor, and a Gender & Sexuality Studies Minor. She is a member of the ODK Leadership Honor Society and of Psi Chi, the Honor Society in Psychology. She is a member of two dance groups on campus, Dance Ensemble and Graceful Movements, and is a house member of the Women's Resource Center. Grace has a passion for intersectional feminism and social justice. Her long-term dream is to change the stigmas and inequalities surrounding the female sexual experience.

Jeff Maynes

Assistant Professor of Philosophy

Jeff Maynes is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at St. Lawrence University. He specializes in the philosophy of language and mind, experimental philosophy, and in the philosophy and pedagogy of critical reasoning. He came to St. Lawrence in 2012, after completing his Ph.D at the Johns Hopkins University. Having earned his BA at Gettysburg College, Jeff is both a product of, and contributor to, the liberal arts; a tradition deeply concerned with the liberating power of truth.

Kelly O'Connell

Alumna and Mitochondrial Scientist

During her time at St. Lawrence University, Dr. Kelly O’Connell played NCAA volleyball, studied abroad in France, and regularly participated in scientific research. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry in 2008, she moved to Boulder, CO and worked for ThermoFisher Scientific before entering graduate school at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. Her graduate research explored how changes in mitochondrial function affect the progression of heart failure. After receiving her Ph.D., she accepted a post-doctoral fellowship position at Brown University to study the molecular mechanisms of cardiac dysfunction in pulmonary hypertension. Kelly now works as an Applications Scientist for FUJIFILM VisualSonics, where she focuses on high frequency ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging. Outside of the lab, Kelly and her husband live in the Boston area where they enjoy the cultural activities in the city and hiking in the mountains of New Hampshire.

Mougheis Umar

Mougheis is a sophomore at St. Lawrence University planning on double majoring in Economics and Global Studies. He is one of the few UWC scholars on campus within his year group. On campus, Mougheis the co-president of the UNA-USA@Stlawrence and is also part of the distinguished Community Assistant and Admission Ambassadors teams on campus. This is his 3rd TEDx event, however, this his first time delivering a talk at one of the conferences!

Peter Bailey

Alumnus and education-based adventure trainer

Peter H. Bailey, ’82, is the president of a small global strategic consulting firm where he specializes in engaging business leaders and teams in transformational experiences which enhance their mindset and skillset for working better together. He is a multi-faceted experiential designer and facilitator who has delivered over 30 years of education-based adventure and innovative training to executives and management teams. A life-long learner and adventure-seeker, he feels blessed to have traveled, worked and lived in over 50 countries around the world. This is the first time he is speaking at a Tedx event.
