Student, SAJC
Hailing from Jakarta, Indonesia, Christian James Welly is currently a JC2 student in St. Andrew’s Junior College. He attended Universal School for 9 years before he continued with his education in Singapore in 2013. A common question he gets upon introduction is “Are you a Christian?” and he has disappointed many people by actually being a Catholic. Christian is usually very quiet, but opens up quite easily. He is an optimistic person and often views things in a positive light.
In his study, he loves Mathematics and Sciences but refuses to be called a nerd. A hobby of his is swimming and he usually reflects deeply as he swims (sometimes he tries to solve math and science problems too). Aside from these, he finds great passion in yo-yos and usually, does not go through a day without playing or practising his yo-yos at least once. Though his interests vary, he hopes to integrate them and be a contributing member of society in any way possible in the future.
Jun Kaih Wong
Student, SAJC
Jun Kaih spent most of his life in his hometown, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. In 2013, Jun Kaih was awarded a scholarship to Singapore. His fourth year here in Singapore, Jun Kaih now attends the Saint Andrew’s Junior College(SAJC) and is currently in his second and final year. Possessing an acute interest in mathematics and science ever since he was young, Jun Kaih’s four years here have furthered his thirst for knowledge in these two fields. Jun Kaih is passionate about rugby and plans to play it even after university (despite being rather new to this field). Jun Kaih is a pious believer of Christ and has developed important values, such as selflessness and love; he loves to help and share. Jun Kaih aspires to become an accomplished scientist and in most ways, contribute to the society.
Vocalist and Dancer
Leonard Lim (林健辉) is a Singaporean vocalist and dancer. He started singing when he was 3-years-old and performed in numerous private and public events since primary school.He is capable of singing multiple genres (Pop, Jazz, Rock and Chinese Classic) and languages (Chinese, English, Malay, Hokkien, Cantonese, Korean and Thai).
He participated in a few competitions, the most significant being the Campus Superstar 2013 (CSS) where he emerged as 1st runner. Also, in 2016, he was a finalist for the Solo Category of SAFRA The Ultimate Voice. He has gone on air with 93.3 FM twice, once during CSS 2013 where he emerged as the champion ("鲜声夺人奖") for the “Unplugged Session” and the other was to promote his self-organised concert “Déjà vu” at Singapore Flyer O'leary Bar.
Leonard first posted his music videos on YouTube in 2013.To name a few, 复制人, 遗憾, and 你是我最深爱的. He has released an original songs with a group of talented musicians and sound engineers called 讓你幸福.
Prithvi Gundlapalli
NUS undergraduate-scholar, majoring in Physics
Gundlapalli Prithvi graduated from St Andrew’s Junior College in 2013 and completed his National Service as an Infantry Officer in 2015. He is currently pursuing Physics with a minor in Mathematical Finance under the A*Star Undergraduate Scholarship at NUS (National University of Singapore). He is a member of the NUS Archery varsity team and a DJ with the group NUS SynQ. He is also working on a side project Tribes, which is a platform aimed at connecting like-minded people.
In Junior College, he was selected for the Science Research Program conducted by NUS where he created a rechargeable battery capable of storing thrice that of existing batteries. He won numerous awards including a Gold Award at the Singapore Science and Engineering Fair 2013, a first prize from the American Chemical Society and placed second in the category of Chemistry at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2013 in Phoenix, Arizona. He has since published a research paper on his work.
Chief Executive Officer, SDI Academy
Sazzad Hossain has been serving as the CEO of SDI Academy, a social enetrprise that champions welfare of migrant workers through provision of customised English proficiency courses, since October 2013. Having the shared experience of not being proficient in English in his early years, he wanted to build a platform to bridge this communication gap. His vision is to create an inclusive society through SDI Academy, and is the author of "Dr English", a primary text for English courses..
So far SDI Academy has engaged over 120,000 Migrant workers through various channels and have graduated more than 5000 students through its programme. SDI Academy has won the ideasinc business challenge “Most Socially Responsible Start-up” 2014, DBS-NUS Social Venture Asia Green Lane Award 2015 and Crossing The Chasm Grand Prize 2016. SDI Academy is currently Partnering with Robert Bosch Foundation to bring their work to the Syrian Refugees in Germany and Rohingyan Refugees in Malaysia.
Shannon Wu
Student, SAJC
Shannon is currently a student of St. Andrew’s JC and was previously from Tanjong Katong Girls' School. She enjoys reading and have a love for language since she was young.
One of her favourite authors is Amy Tan and her favourite books include The Kitchen God's wife by Amy Tan, Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov and Lord of The Flies by William Golding. She enjoys doing sports and have been a badminton player since she was thirteen. She trained hard and has gone on to win several competitions, such as the national interschool games during her secondary school years, and also, the Republic Polytechnic Open in 2014.
One of her greatest aspirations is to pursue a career in either law or communications in the future. Her mother used to tell her every day that she has to be someone one day. This mantra has stayed with her for a long time and she is working at making her dreams and aspirations come true.
Stephanas Lim
Student, SAJC
Stephanas is currently a student studying in St Andrew’s Junior College.
He likes to ask questions and wonders how important being curious is in his Singaporean society. His curiosity into curiosity stems from his childhood in the United Kingdom that has led to his current dream of pursuing Science as a career to understand the new frontiers in the ever expanding field of Science.
Tai Chong Toh
Lecturer (College of Alice and Peter Tan, NUS) & Research Fellow (Tropical Marine Science Institute, NUS)
Dr. Toh Tai Chong is a SAJC alumni and one of the few coral biologists in Singapore. He received his BSc in Biological Sciences from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and completed his PhD in Life Sciences from National University of Singapore (NUS).
SAJC has played a significant role in Tai Chong’s personal development and his accomplishments. His accolades include “A*STAR Promising Young Researcher Award”, “NUS Outstanding Part-time Teaching Assistant Award”, “NUS Best Graduate Researcher Award”, and he was named the Valedictorian for his graduating class in NUS.
Tai Chong is currently a lecturer in the College of Alice and Peter Tan (CAPT) and a Research Fellow with the Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI), NUS. He is passionate about our oceans and has dedicated his research to coral reef conservation and restoration.He hopes to inspire the student community to be future game-changers to protect our fragile natural habitats.
Tianrui Zhu
Student, SAJC
Tianrui is a full-time adventurer and a part-time SAJC literature student(slave), who likes to read books that she does not quite understand. This is her fourth year in Singapore, happily free from her parents, having done outdoor sketches from Orchard Road to Kusu Island. In school, she practices eating chili padi everyday and has picked up the cornet from scratch in order to appear musically literate.
Windy Huang
Student, SAJC
Windy Huang Yuntong is a 19-year-old student currently studying in St Andrew’s Junior College.
She was born and raised in Guangzhou, China. In 2013, she received the MOE School-Based Scholarship and started a new chapter in Singapore. After her three-and-half-year study in Singapore, Windy has learnt to view the world’s issues from a wider and more rational perspective.
Windy has a great interest in human geography and sociology because she is fascinated by human nature and urban development since young. Windy likes to read up about social issues and tries to be a contributor by making positive moves to help others.
